2012

International Award for Professor of the Technical University of Crete

The European Research Council approved as an Advanced Investigator Grant the funding of the research proposal TRAMAN21 (Traffic Management for the 21st Century) which was submitted by Prof. Markos Papageorgiou, Department of Production Engineering & Management.

The European Research Council approves every year about 300 proposals in each and every field of science, submitted by distinguished scientists, provided that the work will be carried out in universities within the European Union which act as the implementation body of the project. Proposals are judged based solely on the degree of excellence of the scientific responsible and the quality of the proposal.

International Award to TUC doctoral graduate for a traffic regulation system  

Anastasios Kouvelas, former doctoral student of the Department of Production Engineering & Management, now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California at Berkeley, was awarded the second prize (together with a postdoctoral researcher from Stanford University) for Best Dissertation Award 2012 by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society. The award ceremony took place on September 18, 2012 within the framework of the 15th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems, Anchorage, Alaska.

Award for Best Research Paper World Automation Congress 2012

The original research paper "A System-of-Systems Approach for Improving Healthcare Systems" by Professors Evangelos Grigoroudis, Vasilis  Kouikoglou and Yannis A. Phillis of the Department of Production Engineering & Management received the first prize for Best Research Paper of the World Automation Congress 2012 held on 24-27 June 2012 in Mexico. The objective of this paper is to offer a mathematical description of a national health system covering all of its stages, from primary to tertiary care, and their effects on the longevity and prosperity of the population. Moreover, it provides a mathematical analysis of the decision-making process about the size and the partial allocation of national resources in order to maximize the longevity of the population, to the extent that the latter depends on national health policy. The award was signed by M. Jamshidi, Professor of the University of Texas and father of the so-called fuzzy logic and L. Zadeh, famous Professor at the University of California at Berkeley.

Best paper award at international conference for student

Athanasios Aris Panagopoulos, student at the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, received the Best Student Paper Award at the "7th Conference on Prestigious Applications of Intelligent Systems (PAIS-2012)" for the article entitled: "Predicting the Power Output of Distributed Renewable Energy Resources within a Broad Geographical Region ", Athanasios Aris Panagopoulos, Georgios Chalkiadakis, and Eftichios Koutroulis.

Award for long-standing research contributions

Constantine Zopounidis, Professor of the Department of Production Engineering & Management received an award by the Ecole Superieure de Commerce de Paris (ESCP) Europe in recognition of his “long-standing research contributions in the area of financial engineering and decision-making" during the 2nd International Conference of the Scientific Society of Financial Engineering and Banking held in London, 6-7 June 2012. The award was presented by Professor Alain Chevalier, Vice President of ESCP. 

Best Paper Award Transportation Research Arena (TRA 2012)

The paper "Congestion Control in Urban Networks under Saturated Traffic Conditions via Feedback Gating", by M. Keyvan Ekbatani, A. Kouvelas, I. Papamichail, M. Papageorgiou of the Dynamic Systems and Simulation Laboratory, Department of Production Engineering and Management, received the Best Paper Award for Pillar II (Transport, Mobility and Infrastructure) of the Transportation Research Arena (TRA 2012), held in Athens, Greece, 23-26 April 2012. Distinction in IEEE competition by students of the Technical University of Crete 

Kampianakis Lefteris* (Custom Over The Air Programmable Embedded Radios) and Yannis Kimionis* (Design and Implementation of Backscatter Links with Software Defined Radio for Wireless Sensor Network Applications), under the supervision of Assistant Professor Aggelos Bletsas, won the top 2 positions in the competition for the best thesis award / dissertation completed after 1/10/2009 in the scientific research field and "advanced wireless communications systems." The competition was organized by the Greek branch of the public community Vehicle Technology Engineering (IEEE VTS) and community Aerospace & Electronic Systems (IEEE AESS). The final phase of the competition and the award of work was Friday, February 17, 2012, the Polytechnic School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. * The two winners are now graduate students at the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, University of Crete.

2011

Minos Garofalakis - 2011 ACM Distinguished Scientist

Minos Garofalakis, Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, was one of 54 scientists from around the world who were selected as Distinguished Scientists by the Association for Computing Machinery ACM in recognition of "their individual contribution to computer science, which fosters innovation and promotes economic competitiveness. The new Distinguished Scientists were honored for significant advances made in computer science, which have influenced the evolution of a wide range of human activities. The Distinguished Scientist Award (Distinguished Scientist) has been delivered to a total of 218 scientists from 2006 to today and that was the second time that it was awarded to a Greek scientist.

Second best paper award at an international conference for TUC student

Yannis Kimionis, a student at the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, received the second best paper award at the international scientific conference IEEE RFID Technologies and Applications, held in September 2011 in Sitges, Barcelona. The paper was part of his thesis under the supervision of Assistant Professor Aggelos Bletsas and the collaboration of Georgios Karystinos and Athanasios P. Liavas, faculty members of the Laboratory of Telecommunications.

Distinction of TUC research group study

A
research study carried out by a TUC research group is among the 18 studies (out of 921 studies that were submitted in all cognitive subjects) that was selected for funding from the Latsis Foundation in 2012. The study entitled "Is the Spili Fault in Crete responsible for the double disaster of Phaistos during the Minoan period?" by Vassiliki Mouslopoulou (Coordinator, Technical University of Crete), Daniel Moraitis (Technical University of Crete), Dionyssis Christopoulos (Technical University of Crete), Lucilla Benedetti (CNRS, Centre National de Recherche Scientifique).

TUC student team win National Engineering Competition

TUC student team won the c
ase study "Resolution of real business problems" in the National Engineering Competition organized by the local association of BEST students of the University of Patras, held on May 23-25 ​​at the Institute for Technology and Research , University of Patras. The team members include: Theodoros Krommydas, Konstantinos Akritanakis, Babis Paravalos, Dimitris Kokkonas.

TUCer 2011: 1st prize for safest vehicle at an international competition

The team TUCer 2011 won first prize for the second consecutive year as the safest car in the international competition Shell Eco Marathon, held on 28-29.5.2011 in Lausitz, Germany. The team managed to rank in eighth place in the large category vehicles (urban concept) by achieving 45 Km / KWh. TUC sailing team: Chania offshore sailing champion for 2010.

TUC's sailing team won the Chania offshore sailing cup for 2010. The cup was delivered on April 13, 2010 with skipper Alexandros Gotsis, Professor of the Department of Environmental Engineering. Crew members included Costas Chatziagapoglou (student, Electronic & Computer Engineering Department), Yannis Nikolos (Professor, Production Engineering and Management Department), Gina Kalogeraki (student, of Environmental Engineering), Konstantis Leventakis (employee, Department of Mineral Resources), Tasos Morphis (student, of Environmental Engineering), Sotiris Papantoniou (postgraduate student of Environmental Engineering Department), Nikos Petridis (student, Electronic & Computer Engineering Department), Dimitris Rekoumis (student,  Department of Production Engineering and Management), John Sarantopoulos (postgraduate student of Environmental Engineering Department).

Distinction in the competition OFFICE OF THE ARCHITECT
During the 11th Hellenic National Conference of the Association of Graduates of Higher Schools of Architecture, a nationwide student contest was organized on "The architect's office." Xenophon Valtas, a graduate student in the Department of Architectural Engineering won one of six equal prizes. The award was presented on Sunday, March 20 at Zappeion Hall at the closing of the conference.

Election of Chairman of the Board of the Greek Operational Research Society

Professor Nikos Matsatsinis of the Department of Production Engineering and Management was reelected as Chairman of the Board the Greek Operational Research Society for 2011-2013 (www.eeee.org.gr).

Award of IEEE ITS Institutional Lead Award to the Laboratory of Dynamic Systems and Simulation
The IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society awarded the IEEE ITS Institutional Lead Award to the Laboratory of Dynamic Systems and Simulation, directed by Professor Markos Papageorgiou of the Department of Production Engineering and Management. The award was granted during the 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC 2011), Washington DC, 5-7 October 2011.

Costas Synolakis elected Chairman of the Greek Centre for Marine Research

Lifetime Achievement Award to Yannis Phillis

Professor of the Department of Production Engineering & Management Yannis Phillis was awarded an achievement award at the World Automation Congress 2010, held in Kobe, Japan from 19 to 22 September, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the analysis and design of production and environmental systems and leadership in higher education and raising of environmental awareness. L. Zadeh, father of fuzzy logic participated in the award committee. Yannis Phillis gave one of the keynote lectures entitled "Important Environmental and Social System of Systems". First Prize in the 19th International Conference on Electrical Machines

Eleftherios Amoiralis, graduate of the Department of Production Engineering & Management received the first prize (along with Marina Chili and Antonio Kladas) for the paper entitled "Economic Evaluation of Transformer Selection in Electrical Power Systems" presented during the 19th International Conference on Electrical Machines, held in Rome from 6 to 8 September 2010. Gold Medal in the 2010 Young European Arena of Research

Rodrigo Castelan Carlson, PhD student at the Technical University of Crete, received Gold Medal at the YEAR 2010, the Young European Arena of Research 2010, for his work "A local feedback controller for mainstream traffic flow control using variable speed limits", Carlson, R.C., Papamichail, I., Papageorgiou, M.. under the "Mobility and Intermodality" pillar, which encompasses the research interests of the Dynamic Systems & Simulation Laboratory of the Production Engineering & Management Department of the Technical University of Crete.  competition for early-stage researchers exploring the area of surface transport within their research. The ceremony took place during the Transport Research Arena conference, TRA2010 in Brussels in June 2010.

Distinction in sports for TUC student

Graduate student Stavros Christofilopoulos of the Department of Environmental Engineering took part in a biathlon race during the Schiniathlon races on 23 May 2010. The race consisted of 5km run, 20km bike and another 5km run. In the category "men under 35", he won silver medal, (2nd out of 43 athletes) achieving a time of 1 hour and 18 minutes. In the overall ranking in the same race, he was in the fifth place among 212 athletes.

EnviFriendly: one of the 5 Best Life Environment research projects

The EnviFriendly project was selecteds as one of the 5 "Best of the Best" of Best LIFE Environment out of the 57 projects that were evaluated in 2009. Scientific coordinator of the project is Professor Nikolaos Nikolaidis of the Department of Environmental Engineering, who received the award during a special ceremony in Brusells during Green Week on June 2nd, 2010. First prize for young researchers

G
raduate student Taxiarchis Bellis of the Department of Production Engineering & Management was awarded the first prize for young researchers at the International Scientific Conference Design, Technology & Management in Manufacturing, held in Iasi, Romania 14 to May 16, 2010. The award was given to his work entitled: "Hobbing wear prediction model based on 3D chips determination".

European Eco-marathon: 1st ADAC Safety Award for the Technical University of Crete

IS&RL participated with its TUCer team at the UrbanConcept category of the 2010 European Shell Eco-marathon competition that took place at the EUROSPEEDWAY, Lausitz, Germany. This year, the team won the 1st ADAC safety award. The ADAC Safety Award was won by the Technical University of Crete, Greece, for the integration into their vehicle design of many innovative and clever safety features, including a fitted adjustable steering column reducing impact damage to the driver in the event of collision, a small boot to contain first aid emergency rescue equipment, and a self-releasing cabin hood which is easily manoeuvrable internally as well as externally that improves the speed of driver evacuation.

5th International Young Architects Ideas Awards and Exhibition

Τhe proposal "Vertical Public Space / Vertical Casbah" of Assistant Professor Alexios Tzompanakis of the Department of Architectural Engineering stood out at the 5th International Young Architects Ideas Awards and Exhibition titled "Urban Interaction Areas in 2023: Public Squares". The exhibition was organized by the Technical Chamber of Turkey and the International Union of Architects on May 22, 2010 in Antalya, Turkey. The above proposal was the participation of Greece and stood out among numerous entries from around the world.

2009

Europe 40 under 40 award to Panos Parthenios

The Assistant Professor of Architecture, University of Crete Panos Parthenios received the European Award «Europe 40 under 40». The awarding of the prize for most promising up and coming talented European designers for 2009 was announced by the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. The program aims to highlight the new generation of European architects and professional designers under 40 years, whose work will influence future lifestyle, work environment, towns and rural areas of Europe and the world. 3rd Biennale of Young Architects: 1st prize to Alexios Tzompanakis

Assistant Professor Alexios Tzompanakis of the Department of Architectural Engineering won first prize in the category "Residences and low buildings" with the proposal "Secret garden city", in the 3rd Biennale of Young Architects_ Leonardo Award 2009, held in Minsk, Belarus in September 2009 by the Republican House of Architects and organizers the International Union of Architects UIA and the Belarussian Union of Architects BUA. Paper award for TUC PhD candidate

PhD candidate in the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering Chryssa Apostolakis received an award for her paper entitled: "An investigation of the hydration and carbonation mechanisms of natural hydraulic limes" during the 3rd International Conference AMIREG 2009  - Towards sustainable development: Assessing the footprint of resource utilization and hazardous waste management, held in Athens from 7 to September 9, 2009.

1st place in International Student Contest

The paper entitled: «An easy to use well design software package for educational training» by undergraduate students Dalamarinis Panagiotis, Department of Mineral Resources Engineering and Andreas Panakos, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, supervised by Associate Professor V. Kelesidis and Professor M. Zervakis, respectively, took first place in the International Student Contest of the Society of Petroleum Engineering, held at the Offshore Europ 2009 in Aberdeen Scotland on September 8, 2009. 

3rd Robotics Technology Transfer Award

Associate Professor Nickolaos Tsourveloudis and researchers Ch. Spanoudakis and V. Kanakakis received the third Pan-European Robotics Technology Transfer Award for the project: «KRISSALOS: A prototype Unmanned Surface Vehicle» at the annual meeting of the European Robotics Research Network EURON  held in April 7, 2009 in Leuven, Belgium.

2008

Yannis Phillis elected Senior Visiting Fellow by Onassis Foundation

Professor Yannis Phillis of the Department of Production Engineering & Management was elected Senior Visiting Fellow by the Onassis Foundation in recognition of his scientific contribution. In this capacity, he gave lectures on climate change, sustainability and other environmental problems at the University of Michigan, Cornell University, University of Washington and San Francisco State University under the auspices of the Onassis Foundation from September, 20 to October 20, 2008.

Energy Globe Award to TUC student team

The Energy Globe Award was awarded to an international cooperation scheme between a student team made up of students of the Technical University of Crete with a corresponding team from the University of Douala, Cameroon for the proposal entitled "Decentralized Biodiesel Production in Rural Areas of Cameroon" as the best energy project in Cameroon in 2008. The award ceremony took place on April 13, 2009 in Prague during the informal meeting of European Environment Ministers. TUC's student group consists of the following students: Sarantopoulos John, graduate student in the Department of Environmental Engineering, Vagias Bakirtzoglou, graduate student in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and Franklin Che, graduate of the Department of Environmental Engineering. Valuable support to the group was provided by Assistant Professor Theoharis Tsoutsos, Department of Environmental Engineering and Professor Konstantinos Kalaitzakis, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Demetrios Lampadarios Award to TUC student Nicholas Vlastaras

The graduate of the Department of Mineral Resources Vlastaras Nicholas received the Demetrios Lampadarios Award by the Academy of Athens for the most talented students in the course of Geodesy graduates of Greek technical universities in the academic year 2006-2007 during the formal session of the Academy of Athens on December 28, 2008.

L. Mousoulos Award to Elias Stampoliadis

Professor Elias Stampoliadis of the Department of Mineral Resources received the L. Mousoulos family Award for original research work in Mining - Mining by the Academy of Athens in memory of the academic L. Mousoulos, for his work entitled «The evolution of a mineral liberation model by the repetition of a simple random breakage pattern» during the formal session of the Academy of Athens on December 28, 2008.

Nikos Sidiropoulos elected IEEE Fellow

Professor Nikos Sidiropoulos of the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering was elected Fellow of the ΙΕΕΕ in recognition of his scientific contribution in telecommunications signal processing.

IEEE Outstanding ITS Research Award to Markos Papageorgiou

The Intelligent Transportation Systems Society of the IEEE Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers awarded the “IEEE Outstanding ITS Research Award” to Professor Markos Papageorgiou of the Department of Production Engineering and Management, for his research on topics of modeling and traffic control. The award was conferred on October 14th in Beijing, during a special ceremony within the framework of the 11th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Carl Wagner Medal of Excellence to Alexandros Katsaounis

The Carl Wagner Medal of Excellence in Electrochemical Engineering was awarded to Professor Alexandros Katsaounis of the Technical University of Crete during the opening ceremony of the 8th European Symposium on Electrochemical Engineering in Prague, Czech Republic, on 25 August 2008. The Carl Wagner Medal of Excellence in Electrochemical Engineering is awarded every three years by the Working Party on Electrochemical Engineering of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering to a European researcher under the age of 35 for outstanding contributions to research in applied electrochemistry or electrochemical engineering.

2nd award in international competition for TUC student team

The Hephaestus team of the Technical University of Crete received the 2nd award in the international competition of Solar Vehicles Design organized by the Hellenic Institute of Electric Powered Vehicles, among universities and technological institutes within the framework of the INTERREG IIIA «Sun & Life – Greece Italy» programme. The Hephaestus team consists of the students: Konstantinos Zervas (Department of Environmental Engineering), Athanassios Malisovas (Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering), Georgios Voutsaras (Department of Production Engineering and Management) and the supervisors: Professor Konstantinos Kalaitzakis (Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering) and Assistant Professor Theoharis Tsoutsos (Department of Environmental Engineering).

2007

Yannis Phillis elected AAAS Fellow

Yannis Phillis, Professor at the Production Engineering and Management Department, was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science – AAAS, in recognition of his contribution to the area of analysis and design of production systems and environmental systems as well as his overall contribution to university education.

Athens Academy Award to Yannis Phillis

Yannis Phillis, Professor at the Production Engineering and Management Department, received an award by the Academy of Athens for his contribution to environmental issues and specifically, for the foundation and operation of the Park for the Preservation of Flora and Fauna at the Technical University of Crete. The award ceremony took place during the plenary session of the Academy of Athens on December 28th 2007.

Best Paper Award for N. Sidiropoulos

Nikos Sidiropoulos, Professor at the Electronic and Computer Engineering Department received the 2007 IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award, in recognition of this top quality research activities.

Distinction for K. Zopounidis

Konstantinos Zopounidis, Professor at the Production Engineering and Management Department, received an award by the Technical Chamber of Chania for his scientific work during the 5th Meeting on Multicriteria Decision Analysis in September 2007.
