coli , Staphylococcus sp. και Enter
 78,70% της E.coli , 31,19% του Staph
ylococcus sp. και 84,43% του Enteroc
occus sp. Στον CWG για την E.coli ση
Staphylococcus sp. 40,48% και για τ
ον Enterococcus sp. 99,69%.
χετικά με την απόδοση του CWP, η E.c
oli μειώθηκε κατά 94,12%, ο Staphylo
coccus sp. 32,20% και ο Enterococcus
sp. 85,18%.

In the context of this specific thes
is, the performance of three pilot s
 cale constructed wetlands was studie
d for the treatment of municipal was
 tewater from the wastewater treatmen
t plant of Chania. In particular, sa
mples from their outflow were examin
ed in terms of the removal of bacter
 ial indicators of fecal contaminatio
 n, adenoviruses (AdVs), resistance g
enes (ARGs), as well as the possible
  differentiation of the resistance p
rofile of the bacterial strains to d
 ifferent antibiotics was investigate
 d. The experiment concerns three ver
 tical sub-surface flow constructed w
etlands which were placed in the out
door area of the greenhouse of the T
echnical University of Crete and wer
e studied for an operational period
of four months (July-October). The t
wo pilot scale units were planted wi
th the common reed Phragmites Austra
lis and had as filling material grav
el and the other recycled plastic HD
PE while the third unit was the cont
rol, without vegetation and also wit
h HDPE as filling material. The thre
e constructed wetlands are labeled a
s CWG (Gravel), CWP (Plastic) and CW
 C (Control).\n Regarding the results
of the removal of the bacterial loa
 d, three bacteria were specifically
 examined: Escherichia coli, Staphylo
coccus sp. and Enterococcus sp. In C
WC there was a reduction of 78.70% o
 f E. coli, 31.19% of Staphylococcus
sp. and 84.43% of Enterococcus sp. I
n the CWG for E. coli there was a re
 moval of 93.43%, for Staphylococcus
sp. 40.48% and for Enterococcus sp.
99.69%. Finally, regarding the CWP p
erformance, E. coli was reduced by 9
 4.12%, Staphylococcus sp. 32.20% and
  Enterococcus sp. 85.18%. Overall, E
 nterococcus sp. showed better remova
l rates due to the high sedimentatio
n speeds compared to E. coli, while
it is also considered that, in gener
al, the basic mechanism for the remo
 val of microorganisms in constructed
wetlands is the filtration of the s
ewage on the substrate. Regarding th
e removal of adenoviruses (AdVs), th
e best removal values seem to have b
een shown by CWC as there were efflu
ent samples in which no concentratio
n of adenovirus genes was detected.
CWG and CWP also showed a noticeable
decrease reaching up to more than 2
 Logs.\n The potential differentiatio
n of the resistance profile of the t
hree bacteria mentioned above was ex
 amined for three antibiotics: Ciprof
 loxacin (CIP), Amoxicillin (AMOX) an
 d Sulfamethoxazole (SMX). This test
was based on the Minimum Inhibitory
 Concentration method, MIC60 and the
results showed that the bacterial st
rains from the CWC effluent had the
greatest increase in this value for
almost all antibiotics. In the other
two wetlands CWG and CWP with veget
ation, the results showed that perha
ps there is an indirect contribution
of plants to the reduction of antib
 iotic resistance. However, there is
no clear pattern on how the resistan
ce profile of bacteria changes.\n Th
e resistance genes that were studied
are sul ll, ampC, qnrA which are as
 sociated with the antibiotics under
study and the 16s rRNA ribosomal bac
terial genetic material. From the re
 sults obtained, the significant incr
ease of resistance genes and their d
istribution in the outflow of the th
ree wetlands can be concluded. Howev
er, there is also a reduction of the
genes in some cases comparing their
  concentrations with the inflow sewa
ge.\n To sum up, constructed wetland
s can be used as alternative, enviro
 nmentally friendly technologies for
wastewater treatment as they can ach
ieve good removal rates for the micr
obial load and also for ARGs, which
are considered to be a threat to the
environment and to the human health
  as well.\n
