Bacterial Community in Household Mu
nicipal Solid Waste in Residential A
reas: implications to health risks\n
 \n Περίληψη:\n Household municipal
solid waste (HMSW) in many part of
the world is characterized by comple
x and varying composition, high mois
ture and organic matter, making them
highly susceptible to decay and con
ducive to the proliferation of vario
us microorganisms. Understanding the
 microbial community characteristics
of HMSW is important to predict the
ir function in the later-on bioproce
ssing. On the other hand, it is of g
reat significance for evaluation and
 controlling biological risks which
may poses potential risks to the hum
an health as there are also pathogen
s attached in HMSW. There is no doub
t that solid waste management can pl
ay as the key role in the secondly c
hain of transmission during pandemic
, such as COVID-19 and influenza. In
 our study, microbial communities in
HMSW and aerosols released from hou
sehold waste bins were characterized
, key factors affecting the occurren
ce and community structures of HMSW
origin microorganism were analyzed.
In addition, pathogens among the det
ected microbes were identified and t
heir potential in health risks were
evaluated with semis-quantified meth
od following US-EPA guidelines. In t
his presentation, we will take the r
esult of HMSW source bacteria as exa
mple.\n The result revealed that bac
terial community structure in HMSW.
More specifically, the richness and
diversity of bacterial community in
kitchen waste were lower than that i
n residual waste. The dominant bacte
rial phylum and genus is Firmicutes
(43.4%) and Leuconostoc (21.4%), res
pectively. The study also revealed t
hat bacterial community is affected
by component of HMSW as well as seas
ons. Additionally, 42 pathogenic bac
teria with potential health risks we
re identified, with 20 of them havin
g high aerosolization capability (th
e Aerosolization Index > 1), indi
cating nonnegligible risk potential
to human health through their migrat
ion from solid waste to the atmosphe
re. This underscores the need for vi
gilance in addressing health concern
s associated with aerosols from fron
t-end facilities of HMSW. The study
provides for the first time fundamen
tal data of potential health risk sp
ecies in HMSW and released aerosols,
 providing theoretical guidance for
the management of HMSW (related to w
aste collection and recycling) and t
he mitigation of public health risks
