 υ\n \n Abstract:\n Building robust d
 ecision making systems for autonomou
 s systems is challenging. Decisions
must be made based on imperfect info
rmation about the environment and wi
th uncertainty about how the environ
ment will evolve. In addition, these
  systems must carefully balance safe
ty with other considerations, such a
 s operational efficiency. Typically,
the space of edge cases is vast, pl
acing a large burden on human design
 ers to anticipate problem scenarios
and develop ways to resolve them. Th
is talk discusses major challenges a
 ssociated with ensuring computationa
 l tractability and establishing trus
t that our systems will behave corre
ctly when deployed in the real world
. We will outline some methodologies
  for addressing these challenges and
  point to some research applications
that can serve as inspiration for b
 uilding safer systems.\n  \n Bio:\n
 Mykel Kochenderfer is Associate Prof
 essor of Aeronautics and Astronautic
s and Associate Professor, by courte
sy, of Computer Science at Stanford
University and senior fellow at HAI.
He is the director of the Stanford
 Intelligent Systems Laboratory (SISL
), conducting research on advanced a
 lgorithms and analytical methods for
the design of robust decision makin
g systems. Of particular interest ar
e systems for air traffic control, u
 nmanned aircraft, and automated driv
ing where decisions must be made in
 uncertain, dynamic environments whil
 e maintaining safety and efficiency.
Research at SISL focuses on efficie
 nt computational methods for derivin
g optimal decision strategies from h
 igh-dimensional, probabilistic probl
 em representations.\n Prior to joini
ng the faculty in 2013, he was at MI
T Lincoln Laboratory where he worked
on airspace modeling and aircraft c
 ollision avoidance. He received his
Ph.D. from the University of Edinbur
gh in 2006 where he studied at the I
nstitute of Perception, Action and B
ehaviour in the School of Informatic
 s. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees
in computer science from Stanford U
 niversity in 2003. Prof. Kochenderfe
r is a co-director of the Center for
AI Safety. He is affiliated with th
 e Stanford Artificial Intelligence L
 aboratory (SAIL), the Human-Centered
AI (HAI) Institute, the Symbolic Sy
 stems Program, the Bio-X Institute,
 and Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute.
In 2017, he was awarded the DARPA Y
oung Faculty Award. He is an editor-
in-chief of the Journal of Artificia
l Intelligence Research and an assoc
iate editor of the Journal of Aerosp
ace Information Systems. He is an au
thor of the textbooks Decision Makin
g under Uncertainty: Theory and Appl
 ication (MIT Press, 2015), Algorithm
s for Optimization (MIT Press, 2019)
, Algorithms for Decision Making (MI
 T Press, 2022), and Algorithms for V
 alidation (MIT Press, forthcoming).\
