\n Περίληψη\n The importance of lit
hium (Li) is recognized by major eco
nomies, with the United States (US)
and European Union (EU) designating
it as a strategic raw material (SRM)
 necessary for technological breakth
rough towards the green and digital
transition.\n Over the last few year
s both industry and academia focused
 on the production of battery-grade
concentrates (typical targets >6%
 Li2O and <1.0% Fe2O3), suitable
for lithium carbonate (LiCO3) and/or
 lithium hydroxide (LiOH) conversion
, from hard-rock lithium-bearing min
erals, such as spodumene, lepidolite
 and petalite. The beneficiation of
petalite-type pegmatites presents si
gnificant challenges due to their lo
w Li2O content, complex mineralogy a
nd the presence of gangue minerals t
hat exhibit similar physical and che
mical properties to petalite.\n In t
his dissertation the laboratory-scal
e beneficiation of a low-grade petal
ite ore (0.92% Li2O), to pre-concent
rate petalite or produce high-grade
petalite concentrate, by heavy-liqui
ds separation (HLS), wet high intens
ity magnetic separation (WHIMS) and
froth flotation is being discussed.
Heavy-liquids separation shows that
both the sink 2.65 and the float 2.5
5 fractions are enriched in Li2O (1.
99% and 1.54%, respectively) compare
d to the intermediate gravimetric fr
action (0.43% Li2O). Magnetic separa
tion shows that magnetic products ar
e enriched in Li2O (~1.2%) compared
to non-magnetic product (0.84% Li2O)
. Froth flotation tests after severa
l rougher and cleaner stages result
in a final float product containing
ά): lithium; petalite; ore beneficia
tion; heavy-liquids separation (HLS)
; magnetic separation;\n froth flota
tion.\n
