 ract\n Mathematical methods are fund
amental tools in Electrical and Comp
uter Engineering, as they enable the
  understanding and prediction of com
 plex physical phenomena and provide
effective tools for the analysis and
  design of modern technological syst
 ems. This talk presents representati
 ve problems in electromagnetic propa
 gation, scattering, and waveguiding,
  highlighting how mathematical model
 ing connects fundamental theory with
  real-world applications in Electric
al and Computer Engineering and indu
stry.\n The talk first considers the
  transfer of electromagnetic energy
in urban environments in the presenc
e of obstacles and corners, a proble
m of particular importance for curre
nt and future wireless networks. The
  possibility of guiding surface wave
s around corners by means of appropr
 iately designed intelligent electrom
 agnetic surfaces is investigated, wi
th the aim of maintaining communicat
ion even when a direct line of sight
  between transmitter and receiver is
  unavailable.\n PTD-symmetric wavegu
ides are then presented, enabling th
e propagation of a strongly localize
d electromagnetic mode along the int
 erface between two surfaces. Energy—
 and therefore information—is transpo
rted along the interface, while the
 electromagnetic field decays strongl
y in the transverse direction. This
 property enables propagation that is
  protected against backscattering an
d reflections. The study is extended
  from ideal theoretical structures t
 o realistic Bed-of-Nails metasurface
 s (periodic metallic pins), thereby
 connecting mathematical modeling wit
 h practically realizable waveguiding
  structures.\n The interaction and s
 cattering of electromagnetic waves b
 y coupled dielectric scatterers are
also examined, with the aim of under
 standing and controlling coupling an
 d radiation directionality, properti
es of importance for photonic device
 s, optical antennas, and metamateria
 ls. Anisotropic plasma structures ar
e further considered, as they can su
 pport controlled and nonreciprocal p
 ropagation and radiation, with appli
 cations in microwave technology and
 the THz frequency range.\n Finally,
 mathematical modeling is applied to
biomedical problems in order to unde
 rstand how electromagnetic waves tra
nsfer energy into and out of biologi
cal tissues. This analysis is import
 ant for wireless communication with
implantable medical devices, a key a
pplication area of advanced Body Are
 a Network technologies.\n Overall, t
he talk highlights the role of Mathe
matical Methods in Electrical and Co
mputer Engineering as a bridge betwe
en fundamental theory and the design
  of modern technological systems.\n
 \n About the Speaker\n Xenofon M. Mi
tsalas is an Electrical and Computer
  Engineer specializing in mathematic
al and semi-analytical methods in ap
 plied electromagnetics. He graduated
first in his class from the Departm
ent of Electrical and Computer Engin
eering at Democritus University of T
hrace and received his Ph.D. from th
e same Department with Honors.\n His
doctoral research focused on the de
 velopment of analytical Wiener–Hopf
 methods for complex wave-propagation
  and radiation problems, including t
 he factorization of non-symmetric an
 d non-meromorphic kernel functions i
n anisotropic media and the analytic
al study of surface and leaky waves.
 \n From 2022 to 2023, he worked as a
  postdoctoral researcher at the Univ
ersity of Brescia. Since 2023, he ha
s been conducting research at the De
 partment of Information Engineering
and Mathematical Sciences of the Uni
versity of Siena under the supervisi
on of Professor Stefano Maci. His re
cent research focuses on the develop
ment of exact and semi-analytical me
 thods for PTD-symmetric waveguides,
 metasurfaces, Bed-of-Nails structure
 s, and problems involving diffractio
 n and surface-wave propagation.\n Hi
s research has led to original analy
 tical solutions and publications in
 leading international journals, incl
 uding IEEE Transactions on Antennas
and Propagation and IEEE Open Journa
l on Antennas and Propagation. He ha
s also presented his research at maj
 or international conferences, includ
ing EuCAP, IEEE AP-S/URSI, ICEAA, IE
EE ACES, AES, and URSI EMTS.\n He al
so serves as a reviewer for IEEE Tra
 nsactions on Antennas and Propagatio
n (TAP) and IEEE Open Journal on Ant
 ennas and Propagation (OJAP).\n His
 main research interests include math
 ematical methods in electrical engin
 eering, the Wiener–Hopf method, comp
 lex analysis, the Sommerfeld–Malyuzh
 inets method, waveguide theory, surf
 ace and leaky waves, electromagnetic
  diffraction, and metasurfaces.\n
