Περίληψη

The global awakening on the transition towards sustainable energy has intensified biofuels research as a viable alternative to conventional fuels. Despite the environmental and economic benefits of biofuels, only few cases have been successfully commercialized and are actively compared to fossil fuels in terms of efficiency. Key barriers include technological constraints, high production costs, infrastructure limitations, insufficient policy support and competition with food crops. Additionally, the dominance of fossil fuel-based energy systems and resistance from established industries continue to slow biofuel adoption. However, the recent geopolitical conflicts and energy crises have highlighted opportunities for enhancing market resilience and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The need for energy security has urged governments and industries to invest in alternative fuels, accelerating innovation in biofuel production and policy development. This thesis examines the expansion of biofuel innovations, identifying the critical challenges and opportunities in their commercialization. Drawing on diffusion of innovation theory, technological transition models and policy frameworks, it explores the interplay of market forces, regulatory policies and societal acceptance in shaping the biofuel industry.
