Abstract
This thesis evaluates the water balance of a constructed wetland in the Olympiada mining
area, Chalkidiki, using simulations performed with the advanced module of Wetbud, a
software package for constructed wetland design. The objective is to evaluate the
hydrogeological behavior of the system in an active mining environment. The theoretical
background covers the operating principles of wetlands, the characteristics of groundwater
aquifers while potential evapotranspiration is estimated using the Penman-Monteith and
Thornthwaite methods. The study area is characterized by a complex geological setting of
gneiss and marble sequences hosting polymetallic ore deposits. The numerical model was
developed on a 36×52 cell grid with four hydrogeological layers and solved under transient
conditions for 54 time steps using a Newton-Raphson solver. The results reveal spatial
anisotropy in the hydraulic head distribution, with groundwater flow directed from the
Western recharge zones towards the Eastern discharge sector. Calibration at monitoring
point OGW02/OGW110 yielded NSE 0.0525 and RMSE 1.1982 m, confirming the model's
capacity to reproduce the principal spatiotemporal trend of groundwater behavior. The
findings demonstrate that the hydrological function of the wetland depends substantially on
subsurface hydrodynamics and the spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity, with the
developed model serving as a decision-support tool for wetland management, design and
planning.
