Θέμα: "Building Adaptive Datacenters: A Case For More Expressive And Elastic Interfaces" by Dr. Marina Vemmou started by Stefanos Karasavvidis

Abstract

The performance of a datacenter server is increasingly set less by its components than by the interfaces between them. CPUs, NICs, caches and memory are provisioned independently and coordinate only through narrow, static interfaces that encode expectations reasonable at the time they were formed. The separation of concerns has enabled decades of independent innovation. But as network bandwidth has grown to rival memory bandwidth and CPUs have come to sit between heterogeneous workloads and heterogeneous memory technologies, those interfaces become the binding constraint, leaving performance unused that the hardware is fully capable of delivering.

Two properties determine whether an interface can keep up: expressiveness, whether it carries the information components actually need to coordinate, and elasticity, whether it can adapt at runtime rather than being fixed at design time. In this talk, I will show how enriching interfaces along these two axes unlocks performance already latent in the hardware. I will begin with Sweeper, which makes the interface between the network stack and the cache hierarchy more expressive. Placing incoming network traffic directly in the cache was meant to keep the network off the memory system, but the cache cannot tell when a buffer has been consumed, so it writes finished network data back to memory and spends bandwidth that co-located applications need. Sweeper lets software signal buffer liveness to the hardware, so the cache can drop those lines instead. I will then present MORIA, which makes the interface between the cache and its miss-handling hardware elastic. The structures tracking outstanding misses are sized at design time and cap how many memory requests a core can sustain, stalling cores while cache capacity sits underused beside them. MORIA virtualizes miss-tracking state inside the cache data array, letting the cache expand its own tracking capacity on demand.

Together, these systems show that precisely targeted interface changes, not full system redesign, can recover substantial performance. I will conclude by outlining my agenda for the datacenter of the future, where AI serving increasingly sets the terms. Accelerators will handle much of that work, but general-purpose components will serve alongside them. I plan to investigate ways to make those components adaptive enough to run AI workloads efficiently without giving up their generality, in energy as well as performance.

About the Speaker

Marina Vemmou recently completed her Ph.D. at the Georgia Institute of Technology, advised by Alexandros Daglis. Her research spans computer architecture and systems, focusing on the hardware-software interfaces through which memory- and networking-intensive applications coordinate with the systems that serve them. She has three publications at MICRO, one of the top conferences in computer architecture, and has held research internships at NVIDIA Research and Microsoft Research.
Mathematical methods are fundamental tools in Electrical and Computer Engineering, as they enable the understanding and prediction of complex physical phenomena and provide effective tools for the analysis and design of modern technological systems. This talk presents representative problems in electromagnetic propagation, scattering, and waveguiding, highlighting how mathematical modeling connects fundamental theory with real-world applications in Electrical and Computer Engineering and industry.

The talk first considers the transfer of electromagnetic energy in urban environments in the presence of obstacles and corners, a problem of particular importance for current and future wireless networks. The possibility of guiding surface waves around corners by means of appropriately designed intelligent electromagnetic surfaces is investigated, with the aim of maintaining communication even when a direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver is unavailable.

PTD-symmetric waveguides are then presented, enabling the propagation of a strongly localized electromagnetic mode along the interface between two surfaces. Energy—and therefore information—is transported along the interface, while the electromagnetic field decays strongly in the transverse direction. This property enables propagation that is protected against backscattering and reflections. The study is extended from ideal theoretical structures to realistic Bed-of-Nails metasurfaces (periodic metallic pins), thereby connecting mathematical modeling with practically realizable waveguiding structures.

The interaction and scattering of electromagnetic waves by coupled dielectric scatterers are also examined, with the aim of understanding and controlling coupling and radiation directionality, properties of importance for photonic devices, optical antennas, and metamaterials. Anisotropic plasma structures are further considered, as they can support controlled and nonreciprocal propagation and radiation, with applications in microwave technology and the THz frequency range.

Finally, mathematical modeling is applied to biomedical problems in order to understand how electromagnetic waves transfer energy into and out of biological tissues. This analysis is important for wireless communication with implantable medical devices, a key application area of advanced Body Area Network technologies.

Overall, the talk highlights the role of Mathematical Methods in Electrical and Computer Engineering as a bridge between fundamental theory and the design of modern technological systems.

Abstract

Uncertainty quantification has become an essential component of modern computational science, particularly in electromagnetic modeling where material properties, geometrical tolerances, excitation conditions, and environmental parameters are often imperfectly known. This talk presents the use of Polynomial Chaos methods as an efficient framework for propagating input uncertainties through deterministic electromagnetic solvers and quantifying their impact on system responses. By representing uncertain inputs and outputs through orthogonal polynomial expansions, Polynomial Chaos enables the estimation of statistical moments, sensitivities, and probability distributions with significantly fewer simulations than standard Monte Carlo approaches. The discussion will introduce the basic theoretical principles of Polynomial Chaos expansions and demonstrate how they can improve prediction reliability, support robust design, and provide deeper physical insight into electromagnetic systems affected by unavoidable variability.

Abstract

Quantum hardware has advanced faster than our understanding of what to compute with it. The talk describes a research programme aimed at that gap, taking quantum simulation as the application where the case is strongest and photonic and hybrid light-matter systems as its platforms. It opens with how quantum computers and quantum simulators work and then presents variational quantum algorithms as the practical near-term method, with results obtained on current quantum processors. It closes with ongoing work on photonic and hybrid light-matter platforms as analog quantum simulators, and with the direction of the programme in the coming years.

About the Speaker

Dr. Kostas Blekos is an Associate Research Scientist in Quantum Computing at CaSToRC within The Cyprus Institute and a core member of the QUEST team. He earned his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Computational Physics from the University of Patras, working on the optical control of quantum systems and photon sources. His research bridges applied and mathematical aspects of quantum computing, spanning quantum complexity theory, quantum information, and the design of hybrid quantum-classical algorithms (notably the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm, QAOA), alongside machine learning for physical-science applications. He has led initiatives that include devising new quantum algorithms, advancing quantum control and noise-mitigation methods, and exploring the quantum simulation of many-body dynamics on emerging quantum processors, logging hundreds of hours of experimental runs on quantum-processing units (QPUs).

Abstract

Controlling the interaction between quantum systems and their surroundings is a central challenge in quantum science and technology. Although coupling to the environment is usually associated with dissipation and decoherence, engineered photonic and electromagnetic environments can profoundly reshape quantum dynamics and provide new mechanisms for control, readout, sensing, and simulation.

This talk will present an overview of my research in theoretical and computational quantum physics, following its development from quantum optics and nanophotonics to structured reservoirs, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum computation. I will discuss how plasmonic and graphene-based environments can modify spontaneous emission, induce quantum interference, and generate distinct bright and dark dynamical components. These microscopic effects can be translated into experimentally accessible optical signatures, including modified emission spectra, transparency windows, steep dispersion, nonlinear optical response, and phase-sensitive spectral readout.

I will then focus on structured photonic reservoirs as platforms for simulating open quantum-system dynamics. Spectral gaps, band edges, Dirac-like structures, and emitter–reservoir bound states provide controllable mechanisms for non-Markovian behaviour and the preservation
of phase information, quantified through the quantum Fisher information. The final part of the talk will address variational quantum algorithms, noise-aware gate-level simulations, Qiskit-based implementations, and calculations on real NISQ quantum hardware. I will conclude by outlining a research direction that connects photonic quantum systems, reservoir engineering, quantum sensing, and hardware-aware quantum computation.

Abstract

Modern analytics increasingly spans heterogeneous data formats and systems rather than a single database engine. While this flexibility allows applications to combine the capabilities of different systems, it also creates fundamental challenges for query processing, interoperability, and efficient data movement. In this talk, we will examine how federated and composable data systems can address these challenges without replacing the engines that already work well. We will discuss XDB for decentralized cross-database query processing, XDBC for fast and adaptive data transfer across heterogeneous systems, and SheetReader for efficiently integrating spreadsheets into analytical pipelines. Together, these systems show how query execution, data exchange, and format integration can be redesigned to enable faster and more resource-efficient analytics across heterogeneous data environments. Finally, we will explore how these principles can be extended beyond relational data to support analytics across heterogeneous data, models, and systems.

Abstract

Quantum simulations use highly controllable quantum systems (such as neutral atoms and molecules, photons, ions, superconducting circuits, …) to mimic the behavior of more complex quantum systems that classical computers cannot compute due to exponential scaling of quantum states and quantum operations. Ultracold neutral atoms and dipolar molecules provide an exceptional platform for quantum simulations because they offer long coherence times, tunable interactions, reconfigurable geometries, and the ability to implement both analog and digital Hamiltonians with high precision. When cooling atoms to temperatures within a millionth of a degree of absolute zero, they form exotic quantum states such as Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs). Researchers create and utilize BECs on ground and more recently in space for fundamental physics investigations. This presentation provides an overview of the scientific foundations of ultracold‑atom–based quantum simulations, including experimental advances in creating controllable atomic and molecular qubits, theoretical modeling of interaction potentials, and the emerging role of neutral-atom platforms in next-generation ground- and space-based quantum technologies, while outlining future research directions and opportunities for growth within the broader quantum ecosystem.
