INSTITUTIONAL INTERNATIONALISATION STRATEGIES

IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT

Background

Many higher education institutions in Germany, like elsewhere, are committed to an innovative internationalisation process firmly rooted in values that might include of cosmopolitanism, democracy, inclusivity, academic freedom, and more. While for a long-time internationalisation was seen as mobility, the conceptual understanding has changed over years and practices evolved. At some institutions, basic principles of the internationalisation process include student-centredness, a strong focus on internationalisation at home, transnational education, intercultural engagement, and a welcoming culture. Strategies assist institution in structuring and institutionalising their internationalisation processes. In this Special Edition, we want to explore how internationalisation practices have influenced strategies while strategies can shape practices in the rapidly changing global environment.
