“City and Countryside”—The Vitality of China's Architectural and Cultural Heritage Exhibition was successfully held in Technical University of Crete

On October 22, 2025, the School of Architecture of Technical University of Crete successfully hosted "City and Countryside," a thematic exhibition showcasing the vitality of China’s architectural and cultural heritage in Amphitheater "Manousos Manousakis". Through the lens of architecture, the exhibition narrated the enduring legacy of ancient Chinese building traditions and the innovative strides in modern architectural development. It fostered a meaningful dialogue between the Chinese "timber framing system" and the Greek "stone masonry aesthetics," highlighting the distinct yet harmonious architectural philosophies of both cultures.

The event was honored by the presence and addresses of distinguished university representatives, including Prof. Konstantinos-Alketas Oungrinis, Vice Rector of Research and Innovation, Prof. Despina Dimelli, Vice Rector of Administrative, Technical and Student Affairs and Prof. Nikolaos Skoutelis, Member of the University Council. The exhibition was co-hosted by Prof. Alexios Tzompanakis of the School of Architecture and Prof. Zhu Shiheng, Chinese language teacher.

Prof. Fu Daochun, Campus Development Office of Shandong Jiaotong University delivered a speech on “How Do Ancient Chinese Buildings Withstand Earthquakes?” with displaying a video on “The Secret of Ancient Chinese Architecture’s Earthquake Resistance” which co-recorded by Shandong Earthquake Agency and Shandong Jiaotong University.

Students from the Chinese program, who participated in the Young Envoys Scholarship (YES) program in China this summer, shared their firsthand architectural experiences from cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Chongqing.

Ms. Wang Ying, Education Attaché, representing Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Hellenic Republic and Center for Language Education and Cooperation, China, donated sets of Chinese Learning Cards. Mr. Wang Wei, Chairperson of the University Council of Shandong Jiaotong University donated Chinese Learning Textbooks. Their contributions are greatly appreciated for the strong and invaluable support to the Chinese program in TUC.

By adopting the innovative "Chinese Language + Architectural Culture" model, the event used language as a bridge and architecture as a medium to promote exchange and mutual learning between Chinese and Greek civilizations.

The exhibits continue to be displayed at the Language Centre. Welcome to visit.
