Doctoral Researcher from the Technical University of Crete's Data Science Laboratory Receives Distinction at the SkyImpact Challenge for the new Heraklion International Airport

Dimitris Zopounidis, Doctoral Researcher at the Data Science Laboratory of the School of Production Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Crete, was awarded the Award of Excellence (3rd Place) as a member of an interdisciplinary team at the SkyImpact Challenge. The competition is an initiative of the new Heraklion International Airport and Bizrupt, aimed at developing innovative proposals for the design and operation of the new airport.

The team ranked 3rd among the 10 finalists, with its proposal being recognized for its innovation, sustainability, and potential for practical implementation at the new Heraklion International Airport.

The team also included Dr. Evangelia Pantelaki, Dr. Manolis Karachalios, Dr. Eleni P. Paraschi, and Dr. Konstantinos N. Malagas. The team's success was further supported by the guidance of Georgia Kostourou, who served as the team's mentor.

This distinction highlights the importance of connecting academic research with the real-world challenges of the aviation industry and the development of modern, sustainable airport infrastructure. It also reinforces the active role of young researchers at the Technical University of Crete in developing solutions with meaningful economic, environmental, and societal impact.

Dimitris Zopounidis conducts research in the fields of business analytics and data science, with applications in airport sustainability, air transportation, the banking sector, and decision support systems. His work places particular emphasis on bridging academic research with real-world implementation.
