EURECA-PRO: Pupils of the 1st Experimental Junior High School of Chania Visited TUC and Met with Peers for the "Young Eco Heroes" Programme (06.11.2025)

On Thursday, November 6, 2025 pupils of the 1st Experimental Junior High School of Chania visited the Technical University of Crete (TUC) as part of the educational programme Young Eco Heroes, an initiative of the European University on Responsible Consumption and Production (EURECA-PRO), in which TUC participates as a founding member.

At the start of the visit, early in the morning, fifteen (15) second-grade pupils, accompanied by two of their educators, Nektaria Ligkounaki and Vasileios Chatzistavros, arrived at TUC campus and and were photographed at the "EURECA-PRO Landmark" artistic installation. Afterwards, they toured three laboratories from different Schools of the Technical University of Crete, with the aim of learning about the research activities carried out there. Specifically, they attended a presentation about the hydrogen-powered vehicle developed by the TUCER (TUC Eco Racing) team of the School of Production Engineering and Management, they explored 3D printing technology at the TIE Lab (Transformable Intelligent Environments Lab) of the School of Architectural Engineering, and they were informed about the use of drones and other robots in research at the Sense Lab of the School of Mineral Resources Engineering.

Following the lab tours, the 15 pupils participated in the Young Eco Heroes Summit, a hybrid meeting that took place via teleconference with their peers from Poland and Germany, who joined online from the partner universities Silesian University of Technology (SUT) in Poland and Mittweida University of Applied Sciences (HSMW) in Germany.

During the joint meeting, pupil groups from the three countries presented the sustainability projects they will work on throughout the Young Eco Heroes programme, each group focusing on a different theme related to Responsible Production and Consumption (RCP).

The Greek pupils, in particular, will dedicate the coming months to studying the environmental impact of textile waste and the phenomenon of fast fashion, focusing on how consumer habits affect the environment and sustainability.

The German pupils will explore the journey of food from the farm to the plate with projects inspired by the European Union's "Farm to Fork" strategy. They will learn how food is produced, what factors affect its quality and how we can reduce our environmental footprint through more responsible choices.

The Polish pupils will focus on the creative reuse of waste ("From Waste to Art") and in particular on how everyday materials that usually end up in the trash can be given a new use and become objects of art. Their goal is to use their new knowledge to teach younger pupils, by organizing simple workshops and reuse activities.

The meeting concluded with a fun and interactive challenge, the Young Eco Heroes Jeopardy game, which tested pupils' knowledge on Responsible Consumption and Production and sustainability in a fun and collaborative way.

The final phase of the programme will take place in March 2026 in Mittweida, Germany, where all pupil groups from the three countries will meet in person to present the results of their research projects, exchange experiences, and participate in cultural exchange activities.
