The Technical University of Crete is making a strong contribution to the 7th World Conference of Cretans, organized by the World Council of Cretans entitled: “Crete and Cretans Today and Tomorrow”. The conference is taking place from Tuesday, July 21, to Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the Orthodox Academy of Crete, with faculty members of the University participating as panel coordinators and speakers.
Specifically, on Thursday, July 23, the panel entitled “Connecting Technology and Education” is coordinated by Professor Minos Garofalakis of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The panel also features Professor Konstantinos Balas, Director of the Electronics Laboratory of the same School, and Professor Panagiotis Partsinevelos, Director of the Geodesy and Geoinformation Laboratory of the School of Mineral Resources Engineering.
On Friday, July 24, Professor Elia Psillaki of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering will coordinate the panel “Water as a Public Good”, in which Associate Professor Aristidis Koutroulis of the same School will participate as a speaker. Later that day, Professor Elia Psillaki will also coordinate the panel “The Perspective of Science: From Harmful to Beneficial”.
With more than 150 participants from all continents, 24 thematic sessions, and 65 speakers from Crete, Greece, and abroad, the conference represents the most significant global meeting between the Cretan diaspora and Crete. At the same time, it aims to serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, the development of collaborations, and the formulation of proposals for the sustainable future of the island.
The conference proceedings are structured around four main pillars: economy and development; the climate crisis and the environment; education and culture; and inclusion, social responsibility, and volunteering. The topics addressed include the international outlook of the Cretan economy, olive oil and wine production, research and innovation, alternative tourism, water resource management, climate change, education, culture, health, and social solidarity.
All sessions are open to the public with free admission, providing citizens with the opportunity to attend the presentations and actively participate in the discussions.
