International Participation Marks the Successful Completion of the SPHERE Conference at the Technical University of Crete “Mechanics of Transportation: Green, Safe and Smart”

The International Conference “SPHERE Conference: Mechanics of Transportation: Green, Safe and Smart” was successfully held on September 7 and 8, 2026, at the Technical University of Crete, as part of the European Erasmus+ Capacity Building in the Field of Higher Education: “Sustainable Transportation within the Framework of Green Deal” (SPHERE) - «Βιώσιμες Μεταφορές στο πλαίσιο της Πράσινης Συμφωνίας» (Project Number: 101128065-SPHERE-ERASMUS-EDU-2023-CBHE).

The conference opened with welcoming remarks by Vice Rector Professor Danae Venieri, Deputy Mayor for Urban Planning and Traffic Affairs Nikolaos Chazirakis, Dean of the School of Production Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Crete Professor Michalis Doumpos, and Professor Georgios Stavroulakis, Scientific Coordinator of the project.

The conference brought together researchers and representatives from the partner universities participating in the SPHERE project, as well as collaborators and local stakeholders, creating a fruitful environment for scientific dialogue, the exchange of experiences, and the development of new collaborations.

The presentations and discussions highlighted the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to developing safer, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable transportation systems, as well as the role of universities in educating the next generation of engineers and researchers.

The Technical University of Crete, with Professor Georgios Stavroulakis as the Scientific Coordinator of the project, is a member of the consortium of European universities participating in the SPHERE project and contributes to the development of modern educational approaches and curricula in the field of sustainable transportation.

The SPHERE Conference Proceedings have been published as an e-book by the Technical University of Crete Press and are available through the Library and Information Centre of the Technical University of Crete.

The local organization of the conference was carried out by the Institute of Computational Mechanics and Optimization (COMECO) of the School of Production Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Crete.
