Makerere University Delegation from Uganda Visits the Technical University of Crete under the Erasmus+ Programme

The Technical University of Crete welcomed representatives of the Makerere University in Uganda from 12 to 16 October 2026. Makerere University is the largest university in Uganda and one of the oldest higher education institutions in East Africa. The visiting delegation comprised Mr Deus Mujuni, Director of Human Resources, and Mr Julius Lebo, also a member of the university’s Human Resources Directorate. The visit took place within the framework of the Erasmus+ KA171 action, International Credit Mobility.

The two representatives were welcomed by Mr Lefteris Maragoudakis, a member of the Technical University of Crete’s Department of Academic and Educational Mobility, which was responsible for organising their tour of the University’s facilities. During the visit, Mr Maragoudakis also presented the University’s academic and research activities.

As part of the programme, the delegation met with Ms Chochlaki, Deputy Director of Administrative Services, as well as members of the Directorate and the Deputy Head of the Quality Assurance Unit. The meetings provided an opportunity for constructive dialogue and the exchange of good practices.

A further meeting took place at the premises of the Research Committee with Mr Heraklis Mandalianos, who is responsible for managing the information systems supporting the development and quality assurance of ELKE’s electronic services. Mr Mandalianos gave a detailed presentation on the Committee’s operations, as well as the procedures governing the administration and funding of research projects at the Technical University of Crete.

The visit forms part of an approved Erasmus+ mobility project funded by the Hellenic State Scholarships Foundation, following a competitive evaluation process involving Greek Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The project was submitted following a recommendation by Professor Petros Gikas of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. Among other activities, it provides for the mobility of academic staff to Uganda for teaching and training purposes, as well as student mobility.

Such collaborations contribute to the implementation of the Technical University of Crete’s internationalisation strategy, strengthening the University's international partnerships and creating new opportunities for academic and research cooperation.
