Professor Minos Garofalakis of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Technical University of Crete will lead the new Blockchain Technology Laboratory (BTL), which is a collaboration between the company Input-Output (IO) and the “Archimedes” Research Unit of ATHENA Research Center, aiming to advance research at the intersection of blockchain, artificial intelligence, and healthcare.
The Blockchain Technology Laboratory (BTL) is the first Joint Laboratory within the “Archimedes” Research Unit, marking the launch of the new initiative for Joint Laboratories.
The laboratory will focus on the frontier of decentralized AI and drive research into how blockchain can act as a secure layer for artificial intelligence. By merging privacy-enhancing technologies, game theory, and distributed ledgers, the lab aims to decouple data access from data insight.
This ensures that the next generation of AI is both powerful and private, allowing for the training of sophisticated models without ever exposing the underlying sensitive information.
This strategic collaboration marks a significant investment in the future of industry-aligned, open-access research and a pivotal moment for decentralized innovation in Greece. This new research hub is dedicated to bridging the gap between foundational theory and industrial application.
Under the leadership of principal investigator Professor Minos Garofalakis and co-investigators Professor Evangelos Markakis and Professor Spyros Voulgaris, the BTL will pioneer open-access research across blockchain technologies and decentralized systems.
