About Professor Emeritus Nikolaos Kalogerakis
Nikolaos Kalogerakis is Professor Emeritus of Biochemical Engineering at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the Technical University of Crete and an External Member of the Governing Council of the University of Patras.
He holds a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), an M.Sc. from McGill University (Montreal, Canada), and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (Canada). He served as a Professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo, USA) and at the University of Calgary (Canada), where he advanced rapidly through all academic ranks. In 1997, he returned to Greece as a founding faculty member of the Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Crete.
During the 2018–2019 academic year, he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the American University of Sharjah (United Arab Emirates). He is also an Affiliated Faculty Member at the Institute of GeoEnergy of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), based in Chania. He has served two terms as Chair of the Department of Environmental Engineering and as Vice Chair of the Council of the Technical University of Crete.
His research interests focus on biochemical engineering and environmental biotechnology, with particular emphasis on bioremediation and phytoremediation technologies for the restoration of contaminated sites, the protection and restoration of the marine environment (including oil spills and marine litter), innovative oxygenation systems (nanobubble technologies), wastewater treatment, and the mathematical modeling of environmental processes.
Professor Kalogerakis has demonstrated exceptional success in attracting external research funding, securing projects with a total budget exceeding €20 million. His research team is currently involved in three European Union-funded research projects. In addition, he serves as the coordinator of the nanoBT project under the ERA-MIN2 programme and previously coordinated the large-scale KILL*SPILL project, funded through the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).
He has also served as a member of the European Commission's Environment Advisory Group (2007–2011) and as a Sherpa to the European Commission's High-Level Group on Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) during the 2013–2015 period.
