The Laboratory of Cultural Heritage Materials & Modern Construction (MaCHMoB) of the School of Architecture Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania, is hosting the summer school “ARCHIVE: Archaeological and Geological Records as Climate Evidence”, which will take place from May 25 to 29, 2026, at the Amphitheatre of the Archaeological Museum of Chania.
The summer school is organized within the framework of the DETECTOR project (Grant Agreement No. 101235981-HORIZON-MSCA-2024-SE-01), funded by the European Union. The project focuses on archaeological and geological evidence used to decode past climate change, with the aim of improving future climate predictions.
Over this five-day program, which offers a unique blend of science, innovation, and collaboration, participants will engage in:
Multidisciplinary sessions with expert lectures covering geology, archaeology, luminescence dating, and geophysics.
Hands-on demonstrations of the DETECTOR portable luminescence instrument and advanced sample preparation techniques.
Guided visits to significant sites, including the Late Minoan Cemetery in Armenoi, the Tholos Tomb in Margarites, Kastelli Hill, and Arkadi Monastery.
Interaction with leading researchers, students, and professionals from an international consortium including institutions from Italy, Spain, Cyprus, and the USA.
The program is intended for researchers, academics, archaeologists, geologists, PhD candidates, early-career researchers, and professionals working in cultural heritage institutions.
