The Technical University of Crete participated in the European Heritage Days 2026, held in the Municipality of Domokos from September 25 to 27, through an original digital route featuring 23 landmarks and developed using the Rollick app. The initiative was part of this year’s theme, “Heritage at Risk – Revival, Resilience, Reflection.”
The event was organized by the Municipality of Domokos, in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Phthiotis and Evrytania and the Holy Metropolis of Phthiotis, with the participation of the Technical University of Crete. The initiative aimed to highlight the connection between cultural heritage and digital technology, while offering participants an engaging, experiential way to explore the history and heritage of the area.
The Rollick app, developed by the Distributed Computing Systems and Applications Laboratory of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, was used to create an innovative experience for discovering the history and cultural heritage of the Municipality of Domokos.
Using the Rollick app on their mobile phones, participants were invited to explore 23 landmarks in the Municipal Community of Domokos, following a route that included a castle, a hammam, fountains, bridges, churches, memorials, and sites of memory.
Rather than following a conventional map, participants navigated the route by solving a series of riddles. Each riddle drew on elements of the history, place names, or collective memory associated with the corresponding location. Solving each riddle revealed the next destination, while GPS technology verified the participants’ presence at each site and unlocked historical information, a stamp for their digital passport, and the next challenge.
The 23 landmarks were not presented as isolated monuments, but as interconnected elements of a broader network of history and memory. Spanning the period from antiquity and the Byzantine era through the Ottoman period and the 20th century, the digital route offered participants an opportunity to experience the history of Domokos as a continuous journey through time and space.
Through this initiative, the Technical University of Crete contributed its expertise in digital technologies to the promotion and experiential interpretation of cultural heritage, demonstrating how innovative digital tools can create new ways of engaging with and discovering places of historical and cultural significance.
