The 1st International TUC Space Summer School 2026 was successfully held from 4 to 12 July 2026 at the Technical University of Crete in Chania, bringing together students, researchers, academics, and space professionals from around the world.
The Summer School was organized by the SenseLab Space Informatics Research Group and the Laboratory of Geodesy and Geoinformatics of the Technical University of Crete under the scientific direction of Professor Panagiotis Partsinevelos. The event welcomed more than 100 participants from over 10 countries across Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa.
The intensive programme combined high-level lectures, hands-on workshops, team-based projects, and networking activities, providing participants with a comprehensive educational experience focused on the latest developments in space science and technology.
The curriculum covered a broad range of cutting-edge topics, including space mission design, satellite telecommunications, Earth Observation and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), space mining and In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU), space architecture and additive manufacturing (3D printing), space medicine and astronaut training, space law, astrobiology, rocket engineering, and the Greek space innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
The educational programme featured distinguished academics, researchers, and industry experts representing leading international organizations, universities, and companies, including the European Space Agency (ESA), NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the Technical University of Crete, AGH University of Kraków, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Universität Innsbruck, University of Waterloo, Durham University, University of Novi Sad, and Aalen University, as well as companies and innovation organizations such as Astroport Space Technologies, D-Orbit, MDA Space, and the European Space Resources Innovation Centre (ESRIC). Their participation provided attendees with first-hand insights into the latest advances in international space research, innovation, and industry.
A highlight of the programme was the educational field trip to Gavdos Island, where participants visited the Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration (PFAC). The experience concluded with an outdoor camping activity and astronomical observation under the island's exceptionally dark skies, offering a unique opportunity to combine scientific learning with direct engagement with the natural environment.
The TUC Space Summer School 2026 was co-organized with the EURECA-PRO – European University on Responsible Consumption and Production, the European Aerospace Science Network (EASN), the European Science Foundation (ESF), and the Municipality of Gavdos. The event was supported by the Space Skills Alliance, ESA Business Incubation Centre Greece (ESA BIC Greece), and the Maritime Museum of Crete. Additional support was generously provided by the event sponsors Chalkiadakis Super Markets, ANENDYK Seaways, Pizza Fan, Cretan Brewery, and Skordylakis Fruits.
The successful completion of the inaugural TUC Space Summer School marks an important milestone for the Technical University of Crete, further strengthening its international academic presence in the fields of space science and space technologies. It also reinforces the University's role as a hub for education, research, innovation, and international collaboration, laying the foundations for establishing a flagship international summer school in the rapidly evolving global space sector.
