The AquaSphere project expands its European reach through seven strategic partnerships across more than 15 countries

The European AquaSphere project, coordinated by the Technical University of Crete and led by Scientific Coordinator Assistant Professor Marios Antonakakis, has achieved - in just six months - seven (7) strategic partnerships with a reach extending across more than fifteen EU countries and beyond, including Turkey, Norway, France, the Netherlands, Greece, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Cyprus, Malta, Finland, Portugal, Estonia, Croatia, Italy, Bulgaria, and Wales/United Kingdom.

These partnerships cover a wide range of critical thematic areas, including offshore wind energy, coastal water resilience, marine biodiversity, technology transfer, climate action, and regional decarbonisation.

This significant outreach was made possible through the Strategic Partnership Development Framework - developed within the AquaSphere project - which combines an ecosystem mapping tool, a stakeholder scoring matrix, and standardised collaboration templates, including Letters of Intent (LoIs). Through this approach, the development of strategic partnerships can be carried out simultaneously across multiple countries while maintaining consistent levels of quality, transparency, and effectiveness.

The speed and diversity of these collaborations highlight the strong interest and willingness to cooperate in the blue economy sector, as well as AquaSphere’s ability to connect higher education institutions, research centres, businesses, and regional authorities. By fostering these connections, the project contributes to the development of sustainable and innovative solutions for the future of water and marine ecosystems in Europe.
