The Technical University of Crete and the Geodesy and Geoinformatics Laboratory – SenseLab of the School of Mineral Resources Engineering, under the Scientific Coordination of Professor Panagiotis Partsinevelos, have secured funding under the Horizon Europe – Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area programme for the COMPASS project – Collaborative Open Methodology for Planetary, Aquatic and Subsurface Science for Autonomous Navigation.
COMPASS was selected for funding among 179 of the 1,905 proposals submitted and brings together four European universities: the Technical University of Crete as the project coordinator, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the University of Luxembourg (UniLu), and the University of Pisa (UniPi).
The project focuses on one of the key challenges facing autonomous systems and space robotics: reliable navigation and precise positioning in extreme environments where satellite coverage is unavailable, including the subsurface, underwater, and planetary environments.
A key lasting outcome of the project will be the establishment of the COMPASS Navigation Competence Centre at the Technical University of Crete, serving as a permanent hub for research, education, and international collaboration in the field of autonomous navigation, further strengthening the Institution’s position within the European Research Area.
