The Technical University of Crete in Venice – Presentation of an e-Book on the history of Venetian Ports and the studies of the Chania and Heraklion Arsenals

As part of the international research collaboration between the Laboratory of Documentation and Restoration of Historic Buildings of the Technical University of Crete, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and the Municipality of Venice, another important aspect of the shared historical and architectural heritage of Crete and Venice is being presented to the public.

In this context, on Friday, 25 September 2026, an interactive e-book, the outcome of a research project conducted by Professor Nikolaos Skoutelis of the School of Architecture at the Technical University of Crete and Professor Elisabetta Molteni of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, will be presented at the “Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa” Temporary Exhibition Hall, in St. Mark’s Square, Venice.

The book brings together and organizes the findings of historical and archival research on the history of the two Venetian ports and the studies of the Chania and Heraklion Arsenals, carried out within the framework of funding provided by the Veneto Region for the 2024–2026 period.

The research focused on the collection, study, and utilization of historical and archival documentation, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the historical development of the ports and arsenals of Chania and Heraklion, while also highlighting the enduring ties that have connected Crete and Venice throughout history.

At the same venue, an exhibition featuring selected material from the studies and research conducted by the Technical University of Crete team will be held from 25 September to 2 October 2026.

The exhibition complements the Greek participation in the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, offering a more detailed presentation of selected material from the relevant studies and research carried out by the Technical University of Crete research team.
