The Technical University of Crete is participating in the European SPINDEC project, which aims to decarbonise European industry

The Technical University of Crete accelerates the green transition of European industry as a partner in SPINDEC, a new research project funded by the Horizon Europe Program.

This is a strategic partnership of 28 partners from 20 European countries is pursuing climate neutrality for energy-intensive industries by 2050.

The project’s scientific coordinator for the Technical University of Crete is Professor Dionysia Kolokotsa, Head of the Laboratory of Sustainable Built Environment at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. The proposal was supported by the Special Service for the European Union Structural Funds, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy

SPINDEC aims to accelerate the decarbonization of Energy-Intensive Industries (EIIs) across Europe. This is an ambitious initiative expected to make a decisive contribution to achieving the European goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, while simultaneously strengthening the global competitiveness of European industry.

The project is based on key European Union strategies, such as the Green Deal Industrial Plan, the Processes4Planet (P4Planet) Partnership, the Clean Steel Partnership, the Strategic Energy Technology Plan, and the ERA Industrial Technology Roadmaps.

Key challenges remain, including fragmented policies, limited cross-border cooperation, insufficient monitoring tools, and insufficient exchange of best practices.

SPINDEC aims to address these challenges through:

  • Strengthening coordination and alignment among member states and associated countries
  • Designing and supporting national and European decarbonization roadmaps
  • Promoting investment in innovative companies and start-ups
  • Improving access to technological infrastructure
  • Strengthening knowledge exchange and mutual learning
  • Effectively disseminating and utilising the project’s results

The Technical University of Crete's participation reinforces the institution’s role in European research and innovation for the green transition and climate neutrality. Through SPINDEC, the Technical University of Crete, in collaboration with relevant government agencies, will contribute to developing synergies among policy, research, and industry, promoting innovative solutions for sustainable industrial development at both the national and European levels.
