Visit of Montanuniversität Leoben to the Technical University of Crete: Strengthening Cooperation in Sustainable Mining Education and Research

The School of Mineral Resources Engineering at the Technical University of Crete (TUC) welcomed a delegation from Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL), Austria, on 5–7 October 2026, as part of the ongoing collaboration between the two universities for the establishment of a new Joint Master's Programme in Responsible Consumption and Production under Sustainable Mining.

The new programme is being developed with financial support from the Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF), under Greece 2.0, aiming to strengthen international academic cooperation and provide advanced education in sustainable mining, responsible resource management and sustainable development.

During the visit, Prof. Michael Tost, Dean of Montanuniversität Leoben, and Dr. mont. Volkmar Kircher held meetings with the Rectorate, faculty members and students of the Technical University of Crete. In particular, they met with Prof. Konstantinos-Alketas Ouggrinis, Rector of the Technical University of Crete; Prof. Danai Venieri, Vice Rector of Academic Affairs, Lifelong Learning and Outreach; Prof. Panagiotis Partsinevelos, Vice Rector of Research and Innovation; and Prof. Emmanouil Steiakakis, Dean of the School of Mineral Resources Engineering.

The development of the new Joint Master's Programme and the collaboration between the two universities are coordinated on behalf of the Technical University of Crete by Assistant Professor Emmanouil Varouchakis and Professor Panagiotis Partsinevelos, both from the School of Mineral Resources Engineering.

Discussions focused on finalising the programme's curriculum, advancing the institutional agreement between the two universities, and exploring further opportunities for educational and research collaboration. Particular attention was given to the EURECA-PRO European University Alliance, which provides a framework for strengthening cooperation in responsible consumption and production, sustainable mining, joint educational activities and research initiatives.

The delegation also visited the School's laboratories, where ongoing research activities and facilities were presented. Further discussions addressed the development of joint research projects, collaboration between faculty members, and the promotion of student and staff exchanges through Erasmus+ mobility programmes and opportunities within the EURECA-PRO Alliance.

The visit marked an important step towards the implementation of the new Joint Master's Programme and the further development of cooperation between the Technical University of Crete and Montanuniversität Leoben. Both institutions expressed their commitment to expanding educational and research activities, contributing to the development of advanced knowledge and skills in sustainable mining, responsible resource management and environmental sustainability.
