“Where Fire Ends, Chemistry Begins”: New Eos Feature on the Chemistry of Wildfire Plumes

The chemistry that unfolds within wildfire smoke can significantly alter the composition of pollutants that are ultimately transported far from the fire source, affecting air quality, human health, ecosystems, and climate.

In a recent feature published by Eos, the scientific news outlet of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), Assistant Professor Eleni Dovrou of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Crete, an alumna of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (CHES) at the Technical University of Crete and, until recently, a postdoctoral researcher in the research group of Professor Apostolos Voulgarakis at the Technical University of Crete, highlights the importance of understanding the chemistry of wildfire plumes.

The feature, titled “Where Fire Ends, Chemistry Begins,” was published following the recent publication of a review article in the international scientific journal Reviews of Geophysics, authored by Assistant Professor Eleni Dovrou and Professor Apostolos Voulgarakis.

Reviews of Geophysics publishes review articles following an invitation and evaluation process for proposed topics. The review article synthesizes current knowledge on the chemical processes that take place within wildfire plumes and examines how emitted compounds are transformed as smoke evolves and is transported through the atmosphere. The article also presents the methods scientists use to study wildfire plumes, as well as key outstanding research questions that are shaping the next directions of research in the field.
