Περίληψη

The exploration and production of oil and gas generates a polluted water volume that represents one of the largest industrial waste streams worldwide. This water occurs not only during crude oil recovery, but also during other forms of fossil energy recovery including shale gas, oil sands, and coal bed methane, and may include water from the reservoir, natural formation water, and water injected into the formation, along with any chemical substances used during the production and treatment processes. Large volumes of this oily wastewater (widely known as produced water) are generated as an oil production co-product and its management imposes a limitation on oil production in many cases. Due to the salt and hydrocarbons content, produced water cannot be freely discharged to the environment, since it can affect soil salinity and plant productivity and damage the human nervous system. Internationally, the most common management practice of oily wastewater is the deep well disposal (DWD). However, this practice poses a significant environmental risk, while they are operationally energy intensive. Several mechanical and chemical technologies have been tested and applied as a treatment step before the final disposal such as membrane filtration, thermal technologies, flotation and electrocoagulation and electrodialysis. However, these technologies are characterized by high operational and maintenance costs due to the high energy consumption, high operational costs, and frequent mechanical failure, which affects their performance. Thus, sustainable and cost-effective solutions are needed in this industry. Lately, the technology of constructed wetlands (CWs) emerges as a technology that combines these characteristics. CWs have the advantage of significantly decreasing the capital and, especially, operation costs compared to mechanical systems. Existing knowledge and experience indicate that CWs can provide a reliable ecological engineering solution for the treatment of water contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons, additives and phenols. One of the largest CW facilities worldwide exists in Oman, covering a treatment area of 500 hectares and treating 175,000 m³/day of oily produced water from a nearby oilfield. This talk will present and describe the design and operation of this unique facility and its main advantages and benefits after 10 years of operation, along with the extensive water reuse practices applied for the valorization of the treated effluent.

Dr. Alexandros Stefanakis is Assistant Professor at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Greece. He is European Climate Pact Ambassador appointed by the European Commission. He also elected President of the International Ecological Engineering Society and elected Regional Coordinator of Africa and Middle East for the ‘Wetlands for Water Pollution Control’ Group of the International Water Association. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal ‘Circular Economy and Sustainability’, and of the Springer Book Series with the same title, and Associate Editor in other journals (Ecological Engineering, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, Nature-Based Solutions). He is an Environmental Engineer and Researcher focusing on water engineering, specifically on nature-based solutions and ecological engineering. He studies the content and realization of circular economy across different sectors. He has designed, managed, and built constructed wetlands facilities for wastewater management across Europe, Middle East, Africa, USA and South America for integrated wastewater treatment and reuse with waste management practices. In the past, he worked as Researcher and Lecturer at the University of Brighton (UK), the University of Beira Interior (Portugal), the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research – UFZ (Germany), and the Democritus University of Thrace (Greece). He has also been employed by a Greek (Ecosafe) and a German (Bauer) multinational company as professional engineer. His publication record includes 45 articles in scientific journals, more than 50 papers in scientific conferences, 5 books and several book chapters.
