Memorandum of Understanding between TUC and the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban)

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been established by and between TUC and the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), to promote bilateral cooperation in education and culture. On the 13th of February 2019, the Administration of the Technical University of Crete had the honor of hosting a Chinese Delegation of representatives of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Hellenic Republic of Greece. The Rector of TUC, Prof. Evan Diamadopoulos, and the Vice Rectors, Associate Professor Michail G. Lagoudakis, Prof. Nikolaos Kallithrakas-Kontos, and Prof. Michalis Zervakis, met the following members of the Chinese Delegation:

  • Mm. Zhang Qiyue, Ambassador
  • Mr. Wang Chao, Cultural Attaché
  • Mr. Pan Yue, Commercial Office Second Secretary and 
  • Mr. Sun Qianjiao, Ambassador's secretary

During the official visit of the Chinese Embassy delegation, the Ambassador Zhang Qiyue and the Rector of TUC Prof. Evan Diamadopoulos, signed a Memorandum of Understanding. With this agreement the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), agrees to dispatch Chinese language teachers to Chania, in its efforts to support the Chinese language lessons at the Technical Univeristy of Crete.

On the occasion, Ambassador Zhang Qiyue lauded Confucius Institute for promoting the Chinese language and culture, not just in Greece but across the globe. "The signing of the MOU is a significant move. Now TUC will have Chinese as a foreighn language study. It is also very important for the students through the learnign of the language to understand China, to open their eyes to Asia and to other parts of the world. Today China is a major economy, and the relations between China and Greece are developing very fast and very well. As for doing business, more investments come from China, and, there are also a lot of educational and cultural exchanges netween the two countries. I thing the students they have to be prepared, in oreder to have the capability of dealing with other parts of the world. I congratulate the Technical University of Crete for coming into this agreement with Hanban, which is the responsible organization for the teaching of the Chinese language abroad. We hope that the Chinese language programme will promote the understunding and friendships between the two parts."

The Rector of TUC Prof. Evan Diamadopoulos, highlighted the importance of the agreement: "It is an honor for the Technical University of Crete to come to an agreement with the Embassy of China. This cooperation is an excellent choice for the outreaching of our University. The particular collaboration was initiated by the previous TUC administration of Prof. Vassilios Digalakis, and Deputy Rector, Professor Elia Psilakis. I would like to warmly thank Ambassador Mme Zhang Qiyue for signing the agreement and I promise that the Technical University of Crete will fully meet the proper requirements in order to achieve an excellent result".
