Prof. Dionysia Kolokotsa, Guest Editor of the Scientific Reports' Special Issue/Collection entitled 'Smart Cities'

Prof. Dionysia Kolokotsa

Dionysia (Denia) Kolokotsa, Professor at the Chemical and Environmental Engineering School of TUC, joined Scientific Reports [Nature] as an Editorial Board Member in 2021, and she participates as a Guest Editor of the Special Issue/Collection entitled : 'Smart Cities' together with Prof.  Anna Laura Pisello [University of Perugia, Italy], Prof. Joel J.P.C. Rodrigues [Federal University of Piauí (UFPI), Brazil; Instituto de Telecomunicações, Portugal] and Prof. Tomonobu Senjyu [University of the Ryukyus, Japan].

Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities, and this figure is expected to increase significantly in the next decades. This continuous growth clearly presents multifaceted challenges as we shape the cities of the future. How we choose to manage urbanization and engineer our cities will have consequences for our world.

The 'Smart Cities' Collection aims to showcase engineering advances and development strategies to "make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable" (UN Sustainable Development Goal 11), by gathering interdisciplinary research ranging from information communication and technology (ICT) to smart and green urban planning and construction automation, from air pollution to mobility, from water and waste management to climate change and disaster risk reduction.
