The SUSTENG 2022 conference in Rethymnon concluded with success

The 1st International Conference on Sustainable Chemical and Environmental Engineering (SUSTENG2022), which was held with both physical and online presence, between August 31 and September 4, 2022 in Rethymnon, was successfully completed. The conference took place in the old town of Rethymnon, specifically in the historic and impressive building of the Nerantzes Mosque, also known as the Conservatory, as well as at the House of Culture.

The conference was organized by the Design of Environmental Process Laboratory of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, with Prof. Petros Gikas as Chairman of the Organizing Committee. It was co-financed by the European LIFE Programme and the Green Fund, in the framework of the project entitled "New concept for energy self-sustainable wastewater treatment process and biosolids management (LIFE B2E4Sustainable-WWTP)".

The aim of the conference was to encourage the exchange of knowledge between academics, scientists and engineers on key issues and current developments in chemical and environmental engineering through the sustainable perspective. Participants had the opportunity to present their recent research findings on a wide range of conference topics and to learn about new challenges, future trends and technological innovations in sustainable processes, following the principles of the circular economy. The participants also had the opportunity to visit the demo site of the aforementioned LIFE project, at Rethymno municipal wastewater treatment plant.

The conference included 27 sessions and was held in 3 parallel presentation rooms. During the conference, 211 abstracts were presented, out of which 162 were oral presentations, while the remaining 49 were posters. 92 of the oral presentations took place in person, while the remaining 70 were online. Among the distinguished speakers of the conference were Em. Prof. Nikolaos Kalogerakis (on the topic "Plastics and microplastics pollution: Are nature-based solutions possible?"), as well as Prof. Petros Gikas (on the topic "Energy positive wastewater treatment plants: The LIFEB2E4Sustainable WWTP program"), both members of School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Crete. In addition, 18 professors of the Technical University of Crete participated in the Scientific Committee of the conference and contributed with their experience to the evaluation of the conference submissions.

The contribution of the sponsors and supporters of the conference was also valuable: REGION OF CRETE, HELECTOR, KAOUSSIS, MOTOR OIL, SEKA, DEDISA, EDEYA, SYCHEM, LIDSEN, PLASTIKA KRITIS, PANGAEA, ECOTEC, ESDAK, DEYAR, FODSA KM.
