High Performance of TUCer team in the Shell Eco-Marathon Autonomous Programming Competition 2021

UG student Alexandros Aggelopoulos

UG student Kleanthis Kyriazakis

UG student Georgios A. Xristodoulou

The Final Results

TUCer (Technical University of Crete Eco Racing)  team participated in the newly established 'Shell Eco-marathon Autonomous Programming Competition 2021',* which was held virtually during March and April, 2021.

Developed in partnership with Southwest Research Institute, this completely virtual competition challenged participants to develop path planning, perception and control algorithms for an autonomous vehicle, and then put it to the test in a simulated environment.

The TUCer team developed a controller for a virtual (simulated) conventional car, which allowed it to operate in an urban environment autonomously. The aim was to minimize the energy consumption, considering constraints related to the vehicle’s behaviour (i.e. velocity, acceleration etc.), the CPU power needed for the calculations and at the same time follow a predefined course given by the organizers. Our team, used a combination of optimization algorithms and machine learning techniques to accomplish the aforementioned task.

The TUCer team was ranked 6th out of 32 teams from all over the world!

The team participated with the following undergraduate students:

  • Alexandros Aggelopoulos (School of Production Engineering and Management),
  • George Alexandros Christodoulakis (School of Electrical and Computer Engineering)
  • Kleanthis Kyriazakis (School of Electrical and Computer Engineering)

under the guidance of the team's academic advisor, Assist. Professor Lefteris Doitsidis.

TUCER team studies, designs and develops green zero emission urban vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells and/or batteries since 2007, at TUC.
