Prof. Lee Siew Eang, Associate Professor at the Department of Building, School of Design and Environment, NUS, delivered a talk entitled "Building Energy Efficiency Development at the National University of Singapore (NUS): A Learning Journey", at  the Technical University of Crete on May 23rd, 2018.

Abstract:
The National University of Singapore (NUS) campus is a vast district of 280 buildings and a community of over 50,000 staff and students. Facilities include academic buildings, offices, laboratories and workshops, retails, hospital and clinics, and a cultural centre and museums. It consumes a significant amount of energy and cater for more than 70,000 meals a day. This talk describes Dr. Lee experiences in the development of building energy efficiency through investigating on academic buildings’ energy performance and characteristics. The project was initiated through a campus strategic grant awarded by NUS in 2013. The project come with practical and academic targets and achievements. Basically, it is a data driven investigation into the energy performance of various building typologies. A campus wide energy data collection network comprises energy meters was commissioned by the university. The talk discusses the real world issues of data failures and approaches towards automated data cleaning, energy demand forecasting, identification modeling and automated energy audit development. An energy dashboard was also developed. In conclusion, the way forward and the potential of researching on campus level energy efficiency will be discussed.

Short CV:
Dr. Lee is an Associate Professor at the Department of Building, School of Design and Environment, NUS. He studied building engineering and undertook research and UK SERC projects at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh from 1975 to 1985. At NUS he was responsible for developing and implementing Total Building Performance concept in the design and development of complex building projects. He is the founding director of Centre for Total Building Performance, and later launched the Building Energy Efficiency Hub at NUS in 2013. Dr Lee is a recipient of the ASEAN Ministers’ Award for Excellence in Energy Management. He was involved in various significant projects, including serving as the principal investigator of the first Zero Energy Building project at the BCA Academy, the National Library Building of Singapore (2005) and the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (2010) and Ng Teng Fong Hospital. He also developed and promoted the Energy Smart Building labeling system for the National Environment Agency of Singapore. In 2013 to 2015, Dr. Lee was appointed World Bank Consultant for Green and Energy Efficient Hospital for various hospital developments in China. A total of 12 hospital projects were completed in the Szechuan Province of China. He was the founding Board Member and Honorary Advisor to the Singapore Green Building Council and was responsible for the development and promotion of the Singapore Green Building Product certification scheme.
