Σύνοψη ομιλίας:

“An exciting presentation about the chances and advantages of a sustainable energy supply for Greece and for the Greek islands. The presentation sketches the current situation on the energy markets. Energy from renewable sources is taking over fast. Thus improving security of energy supply and reducing energy costs and environmental impact.

An appropriate mix of technologies can easily cover the total energy supply in Europe and even more easily in Greece and on Crete, with their abundant availability of sun, wind and water. The presentation then touches on the fair access to these common goods for all members of local communities.

When ownership of the production installations remains in the hands of local citizens, they can keep the money in their community that disappears from it now for the purchase of fossil fuels. Apart from the immediate financial benefits the community will also harvest other values important  for the quality of life: resilience, self-confidence, peace, solidarity, generosity, kindness, abundance, social cohesion, local employment, security of supply, price stability, energy autonomy, healthier environment, reduced climate impact, ….”

Σύντομο βιογραφικό ομιλητή.

Dirk Knapen has been working on energy and climate issues for twelve years, prior to joining REScoop.be in February 2012. His journey with sustainable energy started in earnest after a period working as a trainee at the Folkecenter for renewable energy in the North-West of Denmark in 1997. At that time the Folkecenter and the region were already well on their way to become 100% renewable, both for electricity, heating and transport. In that period Dirk also learned about the typically Danish community approach and has been an relentless supporter of it ever since. 75% of the wind turbines in Denmark country are owned by groups of citizens or farmers. Supporting the creation of the Sifnos Island Cooperative as part of the REScoop 20-20-20 project, Dirk has been thoroughly studying the energy situation and the opportunities and advantages of a sustainable energy supply in Greece and more specifically on the islands.
