Antennas for the New Generation of Wireless Systems

    John N. Sahalos

    Professor, IEEE Life Fellow

Department of ECE, University of Nicosia, Cyprus &

Radio-Communications Laboratory, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece

Abstract: A question that appears nowadays is why in the new generation of wireless systems there is a lot of interest in antennas and wireless devices. The answer comes from the needs of excellent connectivity in combination with miniaturization, multi-functionality, compactness, conformability, compatibility, availability and unlimited informatics.

In this talk, the new antennas for the daily life convenience will be discussed. The critical parameters of Antenna design by using the orthogonal methods will be explained and the ORAMA computer tool will be shown.

Some recent designs and implementations of Antennas will be presented and ideas on future research will be discussed.

Speaker Bio: John N. Sahalos, IEEE Life Fellow received the B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in physics, the Diploma (BCE MCE) in civil engineering, and the Diploma of Postgraduate Studies in radio-elec- trology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1967, 1974, 1975, and 1975, respectively. From 1974 to 1976, he was an Instructor with the Department of Physics, AUTH. In 1976, he worked at the ElectroScience Laboratory, The Ohio State University, Columbus, as a Postdoctoral University Fellow. From 1977 to 1986, he was a Professor with the Electrical Engineering Department, University of Thrace, Xanthi, Greece, and Director of the Microwaves Laboratory. From 1986 to 2010, he was a Professor with the School of Science, AUTH, where he was the Director of the postgraduate studies in electronic physics and the Director of the Radio-Communications Laboratory (RCL). He is now Professor with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Nicosia, Cyprus, and Director of the Radio and Telecommunications Laboratory (RTeLab). During 1981–1982, he was a Visiting Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO, USA. During 1989–1990, he was a Visiting Professor with the Technical University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain. In 1998–2011, he was the President of the Greek committees of URSI. He was the President of the section of Informatics, Telecommunications, and Systems of the National Committee of Research and Technology. He has been on the editorial board of three scientific journals. He was elected by the Department Representatives of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as the Vice-Chairman of the Research Committee of AUTH for the period of 2007–2010. He has served as the Executive Manager of the University of Nicosia Research Foundation (UNRF) and a member of the consulting committee of the GRNET S.A. He served as a Technical Advisor in several national and international committees and several Mobile Communications Companies. He is the creator and leader of an EMC network with five laboratories (three from the academy and two from the industry). He has supervised 31 Ph.D. dissertations and more than 100 postgraduate diploma theses. With his colleagues, he designed several well-known innovative products like the Electric Impedance Tomography (EIT), the Microwave Landing System (MLS), the ORAMA simulator and the SMS-K monitoring system. He is the author of three books in Greek, nine book chapters, and more than 410 articles published in the scientific literature. He also is the author of the book The Orthogonal Methods of Array Synthesis, Theory and the ORAMA Computer Tool (Wiley, 2006). His research interests are in the areas of antennas, high frequency techniques, radio-communications, EMC/EMI, RFID, microwaves, and biomedical engineering. Dr. Sahalos is a Professional Engineer and a Consultant to industry. Since 1992, he has been a member of commissions A and E of URSI. He is a member of the Greek Physical Society, an Honor Fellow of Radioelectrology and a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece. He is a member of EuRAAP, has been honored from several Institutes and Organisations, including a special investigation fellowship of the Ministry of Education and Science, Spain.
