"Transforming the management of diabetes: Riding the digital wave"

    Abstract

The complexity of chronic disease profiles demands a patient-centered system of care delivery. Advances in wireless, wearable, and ambient technologies, coupled with advanced data analytics and simulation techniques, enable the creation of intelligent health ecosystems aiming to optimize treatment and facilitate effective self-disease management. The integration of heterogeneous data sources with existing pathophysiological knowledge and disease models in these ecosystems can fuel informed, accurate diagnosis, timely prognosis, and tailored interventions, underpinning precision medicine. In this talk, we will focus on diabetes and obesity and discuss the transformative power of digital data and Artificial Intelligence from self-care to hospital care, from prediction, prevention, and diagnosis to effective disease treatment. Multimodal data fusion methods will be outlined and contemporary and emerging disease modelling approaches will be presented, including statistics and explainable Artificial Intelligence. The talk will also highlight advanced clinical decision-making and recommendation techniques that are deployed to guide personalized interventions with the ultimate goal to enhance clinical and well-being outcomes.
