Lecture of Dipl. Architect-Engineer Marianthi Liapi, MSc at the Language Centre

On Wednesday May 16, 2019 arch. Marianthi Liapi, MSc was at the Language Centre with an interesting lecture titled "Designed for Better Learning (DFBL)". An innovative Approach to Improve the Quality of Public Schools in Greece.

Marianthi Liapi (http://www.tielabtuc.com/the-team) presented the work she is currently involved in, among which includes introducing stimulating environments to children in education. Her talk provided a unique insight into the opportunities for innovation in education linking architecture to other disciplines.

Marianthi Liapi is an award-winning architect specializing in the experiential ergonomics of space through the application of architecturally flexible and technologically intelligent structures. Her research projects are grounded in the field of architecture and from there on they are branching out in learning spaces and playscapes, transformable intelligent environments, extreme environments, as well as in visual communication and strategies for information design.

She developed an interdisciplinary research and design methodology titled Educational Pla(y)ces (Εκπαιδότοποι in Greek) targeting an enhanced school environment through the collaborative transformation of the everyday educational process into a learning-through-play productive activity with a dynamic spatial imprint.

She has also developed, in collaboration with assoc. Prof. Kostis Oungrinis, a specific approach for the successful implementation of IT in space titled sensponsive architecture.

Currently she is the Research Program Manager at the Transformable Intelligent Environments Laboratory (TUC TIE Lab) in the Technical University of Crete.

Moreover she is a PhD candidate at the AUTh School of Early Childhood Education. Her research work has been presented in international architecture and interdisciplinary conferences, in refereed journal publications and books. In 2002 she received an honourable mention at the ACADIA DDE Competition. In 2008 she received the Europe 40 under 40 Architecture Award. In 2015, her Many Happy re-Turns project for children was a Silver Winner at the IDA International Design Awards.

She holds a Diploma in Architecture and Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a MSc degree in Design and Computation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For her studies in the US she was awarded scholarships from the Fulbright Foundation, the Michelis Foundation, the Gerontelis Foundation and the MIT SA+P.
