Urban eco-driving of connected and automated vehicles in traffic-mixed and power-heterogeneous conditions

Περίληψη

The connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) technology is envisioned to be implemented most likely on electric vehicles, while traditional fuel-powered manually-driven vehicles (MVs) would probably still dominate the automobile market in the next decade. In this context, this talk addresses urban ecological driving (Eco-driving) in traffic-mixed and power-heterogeneous conditions. Specifically, it reports how eco-driving for electrified CAVs of small market penetration rates (MPRs) would affect the fuel consumptions of the large majority of fuel-powered MVs. The eco-driving strategy for each CAV was determined by solving a typical two-point boundary value problem with the minimum electric energy consumption, while the CAV’s travel efficiency may be taken into account or not. While designing eco-driving strategies for CAVs, previous works rarely considered the disturbance of preceding MVs and the interference of queueing dynamics at signalized intersections to the eco-driving maneuvers of CAVs. This talk also addresses both uncertainties under a rolling-horizon optimal control framework. Simulation studies were carried out on urban roads with two intersections. CAVs’ trajectories were determined via eco-driving, while MVs’ longitudinal behaviors were driven by a car-following model. The obtained results show that electrified CAVs each have the potential of reducing more than 70% energy consumption, meanwhile leading to 28% fuel consumption reduction on average for each MV involved.
