Abstract :

The seminar is an overview of the theory and applications of techniques termed ‘managed pressure drilling’ (MPD). These are very good and very efficient drilling techniques, essential for drilling difficult wells, especially deep-water wells, which can be of particular relevance to the long awaited upcoming deep-water drilling in Greek waters. Conventional drilling is an open system, where the drilling fluid (mud) is pumped down the hole returning with the cuttings to the open atmosphere and to the mud tanks, where it is ‘cleaned’ and it is returned to the well. Any undetected mud losses into the well or any undetected influx of subsurface fluids (gas, oil, water), which is the nightmare of the driller, may be detrimental to the safety of the crew and of the well. MPD, the suite of managed pressure drilling techniques, aims to minimize such problems by giving the driller the necessary tools to dictate himself what pressure is applied along the wellbore thus enhancing well safety.

In the seminar we will present the drivers for the development and application of these techniques, the advantages, limitations and key issues in applying such technologies. Furthermore, we will describe the different techniques of MPD, the equipment used, the risks associated and the procedures of how to select which particular technique to apply. All these will be achieved through presentation of the theory behind it, and analysis of case studies.

About Dr. Kelessidis:

Dr. Vassilios C. Kelessidis is a Drilling Engineering expert and an Energy Consultant, a Greek citizen residing in Chania Greece, who provides top training and research services. He served as the Department Chair and Professor of Petroleum Engineering Department at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, UAE, (January 2017 - December 2018, the Department was ranked no. 21 by QS World rankings by subject in 2020). During August 2012 to August 2015, he was Professor at the Petroleum Engineering Program at Texas A&M at Qatar, where he served as Program Chair in 2012-2014. Between 2000 and 2016 he was Professor of Drilling Engineering and Fluid Mechanics in the Mineral Resources Engineering School of Technical University of Crete, Greece. He was a Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Lecturer for the period 2019-2020.

Dr. Kelessidis has worked during the period from 1986 to 1994 with different Schlumberger companies (world’s largest oil service company) in Houston USA, France and England, addressing challenges on drilling engineering, drilling fluids, surface logging, kick control, cementing operations and drilling hydraulics. During the span of his 30+ year career in the upstream Oil & Gas Industry around the world, he has performed research, both as industry professional and as an academic, on various challenges faced by the industry regarding flow phenomena related to Oil & Gas Exploration and Production. He has published research results at conferences (73 publications) and highly rated academic journals (52 publications), currently with 3200+ citations, with a Google Scholar h-index of 32 and a Scopus h-index of 27. Dr. Kelessidis is included in the lists from Stanford University, of top 2% of career-long scientists with the greatest citation impact up to 2019 and up to 2020, and of top 2% of scientists who had the greatest citation impact in 2019 and in 2020.

Dr. Kelessidis has a PhD from University of Houston (1985), a M.Sc. from Oregon State University (1982) and a Diploma from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Greece (1980), all in Chemical Engineering.
