Prof. Hristopulos will deliver a celebrated lecture, following the prestigious 2024 Georges Matheron Lectureship Award he received from the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (IAMG), which recognized his outstanding scientific contributions to spatial statistics and mathematical morphology.

We are pleased to invite applications from 7 PhD candidates and 2 students (undergraduate or Master's) currently enrolled at the Technical University of Crete (TUC) to receive fully-funded grants for participation in the following two mobility events to our EURECA-PRO partner Silesian University of Technology (SUT) in Gliwice, Poland:

• EURECA-PRO PhD Workshop with active participation in the InterTechDoc Conference 2026
  Dates on site: 8–12 June 2026

The grants are funded under the NAWA project "Continuation of support for joint activities within the EURECA-PRO European University (2025 call for applications)", financed by the European Funds for Social Development. Please note that each participant may be assigned to only one event; simultaneous participation to both events is not possible.

Interested TUC PhD candidates and TUC undergraduate/Master's students must submit their application by email from their institutional (tuc.gr) account to eureca-pro@tuc.gr attaching the following documents:

1. an updated and detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) in English, including volunteering and team activities
2. a recent (April 2026) TUC certificate in English indicating active student status in the current TUC study program
3. a recent (April 2026) TUC transcript of grades in English from the current TUC study program
4. the PhD thesis topic and the name of the PhD thesis advisor (PhD candidates only)
5. a prioritized preference list for the two mobility events (PhD candidates only)
6. a short essay in English outlining the purpose of participation to the selected event(s)

The deadline to submit applications is 28 April 2026. Please note that only PhD candidates can apply for both events, if they wish, but they can be selected for participation to only one of them, based on their listed preference.

The selection of TUC participants will be made by a committee of TUC faculty members from various TUC Schools and will be based on academic record and merit.

Regarding funding, a maximum of 7 days will be covered (5 days for onsite activities and 2 days for travel). Various accommodation options (on-campus and off-campus) are available, ranging from 30€ to 80€ per day. For participants travelling from Greece, the total grant amount is about 1100€ (TUC students) or 1150€ (TUC PhD candidates).

During the lecture, the developed methods and algorithms of multicriteria optimization using metaheuristic algorithms for selected topics in mechanical engineering will be presented. It will cover the performance of the developed methods and their practical applications, such as in the optimization of composite structures, MEMS systems, and others. The optimization criteria are determined by solving appropriate boundary value problems using the finite element method (FEM). A brief overview of the coupling of FEM software and the optimization algorithms used will also be presented.

Dr. Adam Długosz (PhD Eng.) is an Associate Professor with the Department of Computational Mechanics and Engineering in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, Poland. His academic interests focus on multi-criteria optimization, metaheuristic optimization methods, numerical modeling of coupled problems and application of CAE systems in identification and optimization tasks.

Dr. Adam Długosz (PhD Eng.) is an Associate Professor with the Department of Computational Mechanics and Engineering in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, Poland. His academic interests focus on multi-criteria optimization, metaheuristic optimization methods, numerical modeling of coupled problems and application of CAE systems in identification and optimization tasks.

A new, free, online I&E course, titled "Purpose-Driven Entrepreneurship - Social and Rural Ventures", is being offered in May 2026 by EURECA-PRO (European University for Responsible Consumption and Production) partner University of Leon (ULE) in Spain.

Part of the EURECA-PRO Innovation & Entrepreneurship Programme, this course introduces students to social and rural entrepreneurship through a combination of theoretical insights, practical exercises, and interactive sessions. Structured into seven units across three main parts, it blends video lectures, presentations, live sessions, and guided feedback to give students hands-on experience in transforming real-world challenges into sustainable, purpose-driven ventures.

The course begins with social entrepreneurship, exploring its core concepts, its distinction from the public, private, and third sectors, and the triple bottom line approach that integrates economic, social, and environmental impact. Students examine global trends such as the circular economy and B Corps, and learn to identify opportunities by detecting challenges, analysing stakeholders, and applying tools like Design Thinking to develop user-centered solutions. Practical exercises include analysing local social enterprises and proposing innovative solutions.

The second part focuses on rural entrepreneurship, highlighting its unique characteristics and differences from urban contexts. Students explore diverse sectors beyond agriculture and understand institutional support mechanisms, including funding strategies and stakeholder engagement. Workshops provide hands-on experience analysing programs like SIMRA, demonstrating how rural ventures can thrive in context-specific environments.

The final part addresses business models and impact measurement. Students work with the Business Model Canvas and Social Business Model Canvas, explore different social enterprise models, and learn to measure and communicate impact using ESG indicators and standards such as GRI, SASB, and NEIS. Practical exercises guide them in developing their own social business model and defining meaningful impact metrics.

Junior High School pupils from Chania had the opportunity to take part in a unique educational experience, through their participation in the European educational programme Young Eco Heroes, which is coordinated by the Technical University of Crete and implemented within the framework of the European university alliance EURECA-PRO (European University for Responsible Consumption and Production).

EURECA-PRO, in which the Technical University of Crete has been participating since 2020 as a founding partner, is a dynamic alliance of nine European universities in eight countries, with a shared mission of promoting sustainable development and, in particular, Responsible Consumption and Production. In this context, the Technical University of Crete develops initiatives that bring students and pupils into contact with contemporary environmental and social challenges, strengthening their active participation and environmental awareness.

The Young Eco Heroes educational programme was attended by the 1st Experimental High School of Chania from Greece, along with the Primary School No. 4 in Mikołów from Poland and the Martin Luther Gymnasium Hartha from Germany, giving to a total of 46 pupils the opportunity to collaborate in international teams and exchange ideas on critical environmental issues.

The pupils worked on thematic topics, such as textile waste and fast fashion, sustainable agriculture and the farm-to-fork approach, as well as the creative reuse of waste. Over the past six months, the teams worked closely with the participating universities — the Technical University of Crete (Greece), the Silesian University of Technology (SUT) in Poland, and the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences (HSMW) in Germany — to develop their ideas and projects.

The programme culminated during the week of 16–20 March 2026 at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences in Germany, where the pupils met in person and participated in a rich program of educational activities focused on sustainability. Through workshops, presentations and group activities, they explored practical ways to contribute to a more sustainable way of life. At the same time, they had the opportunity to experience university life firsthand and tour the campus and laboratories of the institution. Part of the cost of the pupils' trip was covered by EURECA-PRO.

The Young Eco Heroes program aims not only to raise pupils' environmental awareness, but also to develop basic skills, such as collaboration, communication, presentation, use of the English language and critical thinking. At the same time, it introduces pupils to the university environment, opening new perspectives for their future paths.

As the pupils themselves highlighted, "the most important aspect of the experience was meeting and collaborating with our peers from other countries, as well as the opportunity to present our work in front of an open audience, in English, during our stay in Germany". As they noted, "the public presentation ultimately turned out to be less stressful than we expected, but we felt particularly proud of the hard work we accomplished as a team".

"The goal is the same for everyone: to find solutions that promote more sustainable behaviours in the communities they live in," said Prof. Dr. Volker Tolkmitt, Rector of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. "Our university alliance EURECA-PRO aims to contribute to greater responsibility and sustainability in consumption and production through joint research and teaching throughout Europe. This starts with commitment at the local level – and with the commitment of Europe’s young generation. That’s why I’m delighted about this gathering here at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences". It is worth noting that the work of the Greek pupils received special recognition from the Rector of the University of Mittweida, who congratulated them on their thorough and meticulous work.

The coordination of the Greek pupils would not have been possible without the valuable contribution of the teachers of the 1st Experimental High School of Chania, Nektaria Ligkounaki and Vassilis Hatzistavros, who guided the pupils throughout the program. On behalf of the Technical University of Crete and EURECA-PRO, the action was coordinated by Aliki Stergianni. All three of them accompanied the Chania pupils during their visit to Germany.

Μια ξεχωριστή εκπαιδευτική εμπειρία είχαν την ευκαιρία να ζήσουν μαθητές Γυμνασίου από τα Χανιά, συμμετέχοντας στο Ευρωπαϊκό εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα Young Eco Heroes, το οποίο συντονίζεται από το Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης και υλοποιείται στο πλαίσιο της Ευρωπαϊκής πανεπιστημιακής συμμαχίας EURECA-PRO (Ευρωπαϊκό Πανεπιστήμιο για την Υπεύθυνη Κατανάλωση και Παραγωγή).

Στο εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα Young Eco Heroes συμμετείχε το 1ο Πειραματικό Γυμνάσιο Χανίων από την Ελλάδα, μαζί με το Primary School No. 4 in Mikołów από την Πολωνία και το Martin Luther Gymnasium Hartha από τη Γερμανία, δίνοντας την ευκαιρία σε συνολικά 46 μαθητές να συνεργαστούν σε διεθνείς ομάδες και να ανταλλάξουν ιδέες γύρω από κρίσιμα περιβαλλοντικά ζητήματα.

Οι μαθητές εργάστηκαν σε θεματικές ενότητες, όπως τα κλωστοϋφαντουργικά απορρίμματα και το fast fashion, η αειφόρος γεωργία και η προσέγγιση farm-to-fork, καθώς και η δημιουργική επαναχρησιμοποίηση απορριμμάτων. Κατά τη διάρκεια των τελευταίων έξι μηνών, οι ομάδες συνεργάστηκαν στενά με τα συμμετέχοντα πανεπιστήμια — το Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης, το Silesian University of Technology (SUT) στην Πολωνία και το Mittweida University of Applied Sciences (HSMW) στη Γερμανία — αναπτύσσοντας τις ιδέες και τα έργα τους.

Η κορύφωση του προγράμματος πραγματοποιήθηκε την εβδομάδα 16–20 Μαρτίου 2026 στο Πανεπιστήμιο Εφαρμοσμένων Επιστημών του Mittweida στη Γερμανία, όπου οι μαθητές συναντήθηκαν διά ζώσης και συμμετείχαν σε ένα πλούσιο πρόγραμμα εκπαιδευτικών δραστηριοτήτων με επίκεντρο τη βιωσιμότητα. Μέσα από εργαστήρια, παρουσιάσεις και ομαδικές δράσεις, διερεύνησαν πρακτικούς τρόπους συμβολής σε έναν πιο βιώσιμο τρόπο ζωής, ενώ παράλληλα είχαν την ευκαιρία να γνωρίσουν από κοντά το πανεπιστημιακό περιβάλλον και να περιηγηθούν στους χώρους και τα εργαστήρια του ιδρύματος. Μέρος του κόστους του ταξιδιού των μαθητών καλύφθηκε από το EURECA-PRO.

Το πρόγραμμα Young Eco Heroes στοχεύει όχι μόνο στην περιβαλλοντική ευαισθητοποίηση των μαθητών, αλλά και στην ανάπτυξη βασικών δεξιοτήτων, όπως η συνεργασία, η επικοινωνία, η παρουσίαση, η χρήση της Αγγλικής γλώσσας και η κριτική σκέψη. Παράλληλα, φέρνει τους μαθητές σε επαφή με το πανεπιστημιακό περιβάλλον, ανοίγοντας νέους ορίζοντες για τη μελλοντική τους πορεία.

Όπως ανέφεραν οι ίδιοι οι μαθητές, «το πιο σημαντικό στοιχείο της εμπειρίας ήταν η γνωριμία και η συνεργασία με συνομηλίκους μας από άλλες χώρες, καθώς και η δυνατότητα να παρουσιάσουμε τη δουλειά μας μπροστά σε ανοικτό κοινό, στην Αγγλική γλώσσα, κατά την παραμονή μας στη Γερμανία». Όπως χαρακτηριστικά σημείωσαν, «η δημόσια παρουσίαση αποδείχθηκε τελικά λιγότερο αγχωτική από ό,τι περιμέναμε, αλλά νιώσαμε ιδιαίτερα περήφανοι για τη σκληρή δουλειά που καταβάλαμε ως ομάδα».

«Ο στόχος είναι ο ίδιος για όλους: να βρεθούν λύσεις που προωθούν πιο βιώσιμες συμπεριφορές στις κοινότητες στις οποίες ζουν», δήλωσε χαρακτηριστικά ο Καθ. Volker Tolkmitt, Πρύτανης του Πανεπιστημίου Εφαρμοσμένων Επιστημών Mittweida. «Η πανεπιστημιακή μας συμμαχία EURECA-PRO στοχεύει να συμβάλει σε μεγαλύτερη υπευθυνότητα και βιωσιμότητα στην κατανάλωση και την παραγωγή μέσω κοινής έρευνας και διδασκαλίας σε όλη την Ευρώπη. Αυτό ξεκινά με τη δέσμευση σε τοπικό επίπεδο - και με τη δέσμευση της νέας γενιάς της Ευρώπης. Γι' αυτό είμαι ενθουσιασμένος με αυτή τη συνάντηση εδώ στο Πανεπιστήμιο Εφαρμοσμένων Επιστημών Mittweida». Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι η εργασία των Ελλήνων μαθητών έλαβε ιδιαίτερη αναγνώριση από τον Πρύτανη του Πανεπιστημίου του Mittweida, ο οποίος τους συνεχάρη ιδιαίτερα για τη διεξοδική και επιμελημένη εργασία τους.

Ο συντονισμός των Ελλήνων μαθητών δεν θα ήταν δυνατός χωρίς την πολύτιμη συμβολή των εκπαιδευτικών του 1ου Πειραματικού Γυμνασίου Χανίων Νεκταρίας Λιγκουνάκη και Βασίλη Χατζησταύρου, οι οποίοι καθοδήγησαν τους μαθητές καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του προγράμματος. Εκ μέρους του Πολυτεχνείου Κρήτης και του EURECA-PRO τη δράση συντόνισε η Αλίκη Στεργιάννη. Και οι τρεις συνόδεψαν τους Χανιώτες μαθητές κατά την επίσκεψή τους στη Γερμανία.
