• Team Structure: Teams must consist of 2 main players + 1 substitute player
• Tournament Format: Group Stage (Single Round-Robin — each university team plays against every other team once) followed by Semi-Finals and Finals for the top-ranking teams.
• Team Selection: Teams may freely choose their preferred national team within a designated rating range (4.5★ to 5★ rating) to ensure fair and competitive matches.
• University Selection: Students register through their home university. If the number of applicants exceeds available slots, each university will select its representative team at its own discretion.

A secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials is a key for economic stability, technological sovereignty, and ecological transformation. Without a reliable resource base, essential technologies such as electromobility, renewable energy, and digitalization cannot be realized. In light of geopolitical tensions, disrupted supply chains, and increasing resource scarcity, local responsible raw material production has become more relevant than ever.

At the same time, raw material projects often encounter public opposition - ranging from environmental concerns to local resistance, and questions of social justice and participation. These challenges not only complicate project implementation but also undermine trust between industry, policymakers, and society. Public acceptance has thus become a decisive success factor for sustainable raw material strategies.

This conference brings together researchers, industry and public service representatives, and other stakeholders for an open dialogue. We will explore how responsible resource extraction can align with societal values and community expectations. The goal is to develop shared perspectives and evidence-based strategies for socially responsible and publicly accepted resource extraction.

EURECA-PRO faculty, researchers, and doctoral students, interested in Sustainable Mining and Processing or Circular Economy, are more than welcome to participate. The conference will cover several practical case studies of mining industry, scientific impulses and contributions from Human Rights experts, civil society, including indigenous communities, as well as legal regulatory authorities.

The next lecture of the series, hosted by the School of Mineral Resources Engineering (MRE) of the Technical University of Crete, will be delivered by Christian Frigaard Rasmussen, PhD Fellow with the Department of Ecoscience, Aarhus University in Denmark, and member of the Arctic Environment research group. Christian Frigaard Rasmussen’s PhD research focuses on Arctic mine sites in permafrost-dominated areas, with particular emphasis on the spatial distribution of terrestrial pollution and the effects of climate change on mine-waste redistribution.

The European University on Responsible Consumption and Production (EURECA-PRO), in which the Technical University of Crete (TUC) participates as a founding member since 2020, organizes targeted capacity-building training seminars, workshops, and joint events to help students, researchers, and university staff enhance their skills, build institutional peer networks, and expand their international research horizons.

On Thursday May 7th, 2026 representatives from Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) of EURECA-PRO partner universities met virtually to share their blueprints for turning ideas into impact. The presentations and discussion highlighted several best practices for successful technology transfer and innovation support across the EURECA-PRO alliance.

The discussion was facilitated from Afroditi Fotiou, member of the EURECA-PRO team at the Technical University of Crete (TUC), who initiated the conversation with a short introduction on EURECA-PRO’s approach to Research and Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E), as well as insights from the young and dynamic TTO at TUC.

One key takeaway was the value of a strong and well-integrated support structure. Anneke Kennens, Communication and Projects Manager in Tech Transfer Office of Hasselt University (HU), showcased a centralized TTO of 31 people, where legal experts, spin-off creators, and decentralized business developers work side-by-side with researchers to foster an entrepreneurial mindset. Key highlights include a "Valorization Academy" and a powerful connection to Flanders’ regional ecosystem.

Another important lesson focused on user-centred innovation. Steven Palmaers, Business Developer in the Digital Future Lab of Hasselt University (HU), introduced Flanders Make, a strategic research center with a human centered approach. He tackled the classic dilemma—Tech Push vs. Market Pull strategy —and concluded that the best innovation bridges both worlds. Whether reinventing cleanroom training or monitoring worker well-being, the golden rule remains: validate early and involve real users.

Long-term collaboration emerged as a third success factor. Karin Rehatschek, Director of the Research and Innovation Service of the Technical University of Leoben (TUL), focused on two topics. She introduced the institute and its service portfolio and presented the "TechFair" event as a best practice example to reinforce networking of researchers with the regional ecosystem. The Technology Transfer Office of TUL counts 25 years of operation and 14 staff members. At TUL, technology transfer activities are based on long term relationships with industrial stakeholders. With structured initiatives like "Science Fit" that enable visits in Styrian SMEs and "COoperation INnovation" for technology and know-how development of SMEs, small projects lead to long-term collaborations.

All parties agreed that the human factor is an essential driver of innovation, either on involving people in making tomorrow’s technology, fostering research on adaptive reuse or investing in long-lasting, trustful collaborations, the societal impact of innovation makes the difference. The presented examples illustrated how smaller projects can serve as entry points for lasting partnerships that create value for both academia and industry.

Across all presentations, a common message became clear: successful technology transfer is not only about processes, funding, or intellectual property. It is ultimately driven by people, trust, and collaboration. Whether through entrepreneurship support, user engagement, or long-term partnerships, the most impactful innovations emerge when strong networks connect research with societal and industrial needs.

Το Ευρωπαϊκό Πανεπιστήμιο για την Υπεύθυνη Κατανάλωση και Παραγωγή (EURECA-PRO), στο οποίο το Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης συμμετέχει ως ιδρυτικό μέλος από το 2020, διοργανώνει στοχευμένα σεμινάρια κατάρτισης για την ανάπτυξη δεξιοτήτων και δι-ιδρυματικές ημερίδες για να βοηθήσει φοιτητές, καθηγητές, ερευνητές και προσωπικό των πανεπιστημίων να βελτιώσουν τις δεξιότητές τους, να δημιουργήσουν ιδρυματικά δίκτυα συνεργατών και να επεκτείνουν τους διεθνείς ερευνητικούς τους ορίζοντες.

Την Πέμπτη 7 Μαΐου 2026 εκπρόσωποι από τα Γραφεία Μεταφοράς Τεχνολογίας (ΓΜΤ), γνωστά και ως Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs), των πανεπιστημίων-εταίρων του EURECA-PRO συναντήθηκαν διαδικτυακά για να μοιραστούν τις καλές πρακτικές τους για την αξιοποίηση ερευνητικών αποτελεσμάτων. Οι παρουσιάσεις και η συζήτηση που ακολούθησε ανέδειξαν αρκετά στοιχεία για την επιτυχή μεταφορά τεχνολογίας και την υποστήριξη της καινοτομίας σε ολόκληρη τη συμμαχία EURECA-PRO.

Η συζήτηση συντονίστηκε από την Αφροδίτη Φωτίου, μέλος της ομάδας EURECA-PRO στο Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης, η οποία ξεκίνησε τη συζήτηση με μια σύντομη εισαγωγή στην προσέγγιση που ακολουθεί το EURECA-PRO στους τομείς της Έρευνας, Καινοτομίας και Επιχειρηματικότητας (I&E), καθώς και με μια παρουσίαση του νεοσύστατου και δυναμικού ΓΜΤ του Πολυτεχνείου Κρήτης.

Ένα βασικό συμπέρασμα ήταν η αξία μιας ισχυρής και καλά ενσωματωμένης δομής υποστήριξης. Η Anneke Kennens, Διευθύντρια Επικοινωνίας και Έργων στο ΓΜΤ του Πανεπιστημίου Hasselt (Βέλγιο), παρουσίασε τη δομή του δικού τους ΓΜΤ που αποτελείται από 31 άτομα, όπου νομικοί εμπειρογνώμονες, δημιουργοί spin-off και αποκεντρωμένοι επιχειρηματικοί σύμβουλοι συνεργάζονται με ερευνητές για να καλλιεργήσουν μια επιχειρηματική νοοτροπία. Τα βασικά σημεία περιλαμβάνουν μια «Ακαδημία Αξιοποίησης» και μια ισχυρή σύνδεση με το περιφερειακό οικοσύστημα της Φλαμανδίας.

Ένα άλλο σημαντικό μήνυμα επικεντρώθηκε στην καινοτομία με επίκεντρο τον χρήστη. Η μακροχρόνια συνεργασία αναδείχθηκε ως ο τρίτος παράγοντας επιτυχίας. Η Karin Rehatschek, Διευθύντρια της Υπηρεσίας Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας του Πολυτεχνείου του Leoben (Αυστρία), επικεντρώθηκε σε δύο θέματα. Παρουσίασε το ΓΜΤ και τις δραστηριότητές του, καθώς και την έκθεση "TechFair" ως παράδειγμα καλής πρακτικής για την ενίσχυση της δικτύωσης των ερευνητών με το τοπικό επιχειρηματικό οικοσύστημα. Το ΓΜΤ του TUL μετρά 25 χρόνια λειτουργίας και 14 μέλη προσωπικού. Στο Leoben, οι δραστηριότητες μεταφοράς τεχνολογίας βασίζονται σε μακροχρόνιες σχέσεις με βιομηχανικούς εταίρους. Με δομημένες πρωτοβουλίες, όπως το "Science Fit" που επιτρέπει επισκέψεις σε μικρομεσαίες επιχειρήσεις της περιοχής της Στυρίας και το "COoperation INnovation" για την ανάπτυξη τεχνολογίας και τεχνογνωσίας των μικρομεσαίων επιχειρήσεων, φάνηκε ότι τα μικρά έργα οδηγούν σε μακροπρόθεσμες συνεργασίες.

Όλοι οι συμμετέχοντες συμφώνησαν ότι ο ανθρώπινος παράγοντας αποτελεί βασικό μοχλό της καινοτομίας, είτε μέσω της εμπλοκής των ανθρώπων στη δημιουργία της τεχνολογίας του αύριο, είτε μέσω της προώθησης της έρευνας για επαναχρησιμοποίηση, είτε μέσω της επένδυσης σε μακροχρόνιες συνεργασίες - ο κοινωνικός αντίκτυπος της καινοτομίας είναι αυτός που κάνει τη διαφορά. Τα παραδείγματα που παρουσιάστηκαν κατέδειξαν πώς τα μικρότερα έργα μπορούν να χρησιμεύσουν ως σημεία εισόδου για διαρκείς συνεργασίες που δημιουργούν αξία, τόσο για τον ακαδημαϊκό χώρο, όσο και για τη βιομηχανία.

Σε όλες τις παρουσιάσεις, ένα κοινό μήνυμα έγινε σαφές: η επιτυχημένη μεταφορά τεχνολογίας δεν αφορά μόνο τις διαδικασίες, τη χρηματοδότηση ή την πνευματική ιδιοκτησία. Τελικά, καθοδηγείται από τους ανθρώπους, την εμπιστοσύνη και τη συνεργασία. Είτε μέσω της υποστήριξης της επιχειρηματικότητας και της εμπλοκής των χρηστών, είτε μέσω μακροχρόνιων συνεργασιών, οι καινοτομίες με τον μεγαλύτερο αντίκτυπο αναδύονται όταν ισχυρά δίκτυα συνδέουν την έρευνα με τις κοινωνικές και βιομηχανικές ανάγκες.

A total of 20 delegates from all partner institutions of the European University alliance EURECA-PRO gather this week (15-19 June 2026) in Chania, Greece at the Campus of the Technical University of Crete (TUC) to participate in the onsite component of the Blended Intensive Program (BIP) for staff training, entitled "Intercultural Upskilling". This program is part of and is being supported and funded by the Erasmus+ KA131 2024 Project. 

Participants have already joined five online sessions (90 minutes each) in the past months, since January 2026. This week is the concluding in-person Staff Week with a full training program, including lectures, workshops, cultural activities, and networking opportunities, taking place on TUC Campus and the broader area of Chania.

The Youth Pre-Contest is a full-day hands-on challenge focused on physiological signal analysis using supervised and unsupervised analysis techniques. Participants will receive a dataset to train and evaluate their own model on their personal device. The goal is to develop a model that best fits the data provided and achieves the best performance according to the evaluation criteria defined by the organizers. The contest offers students, PhD’s and researchers under 36 years the opportunity to test their skills, work on a practical data-based challenge, and exchange ideas with other young researchers. The contest will take place in a hybrid format: participants can join online via Microsoft Teams or attend on-site at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences if they live close-by (snacks and drinks will be provided). Students, PhD’s and researchers under 36 years can work individually or in teams of up to three members. Participation is free of charge.

Στο επιστημονικό αυτό σεμινάριο, τρεις υποψήφιοι διδάκτορες θα παρουσιάσουν την πρωτοποριακή τους έρευνα που αφορά στις βασικές προκλήσεις στον κλιματικό κίνδυνο, τη βιώσιμη διακυβέρνηση και τις προηγμένες μεθόδους βελτιστοποίησης. Το σεμινάριο προσφέρει μια μοναδική ματιά στο πώς διαφορετικά συστήματα – από φυσικά περιβάλλοντα έως οργανισμούς και βιομηχανικές διαδικασίες – μπορούν να ανταποκριθούν στις αυξανόμενες προκλήσεις βιωσιμότητας και κλιματικής αλλαγής και στο πώς οι καινοτόμες ερευνητικές προσεγγίσεις συμβάλλουν σε πιο ανθεκτικά, υπεύθυνα και ενεργειακά αποδοτικά συστήματα.
