LORENZO LAZZARINI
Full Professor of Applied Petrography at the Università I.U.A.V.di Venezia Department of Architectural History
Director of the L.A.M.A. (Laboratorio di Analisi dei Materiali Antichi = Laboratory for the Analysis of Ancient Materials), I.U.A.V.
Main research and scientific activities
• Fellow (and in 2004, Councillor) of the International Institute for Conservation (I.I.C.), London, since 1981
• Former Fellow of the Petrography Group of the ICOMOS Stone Committee
• From the beginning to 2008, member (elected) of the Permanent Scientific Committee for the organisation of the International Congresses on the Deterioration and Conservation of Stone
• Permanent Charter Member of the “International Committee for the Preservation of the Acropolis Monuments” created by the Ministry for Culture of Greece
• Scientific consultant for UNESCO (Paris) and ICCROM (Rome) in several stone and mural painting restoration projects in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Israel, Turkey and Greece. Same for The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (on studies of the Italian Sculpture Collection, the Apse of Fuentiduena and Cleopatra’s Needle), the Musée Du Louvre, Paris (on the provenance of metopes of the Zeus’ Temple of Olympia and the stela of Naram-Sin), and the Getty Conservation Institute on monuments of Copan, Honduras.
• Scientific consultant in many stone restoration project for the MBCA, the Italian Ministry for Cultural and Environmental Properties (e.g. the statues of Prato della Valle, Padua; Palazzo Chiericati, Vicenza; the Arena of Verona; the ancient Theatre of Eraclea Minoa (Agrigento); the bell tower of the Dome of Agrigento; the Cathedral of Cefalù; the Portal of Castello Maniace, Siracusa; etc.).
Publications
Author of two books on the restoration of stone (one also translated in French), two books on the archaeometry of marbles used in antiquity and of more than 350 scientific publications in international and national journals, proceedings of national and international congresses, contributions in books and catalogues, etc. Editor of three books on marbles and stones used in antiquity and of the international Journal “Marmora” (5 numbers so far published) on the archaeology and archaeometry of marbles.
