Περίληψη ομιλίας:

In this talk, I will be discussing how ultracold atoms can created and manipulated and how this form of quantum matter can be an ideal platform for ultraprecise measurements.

In the first part, I will be presenting our work with Bose-Einstein condensates and degenerate Fermi gases of strontium with the immediate goal to perform quantum simulation of strong magnetic fields, and the prospect to realize a quantum gas microscope, that can detect single-atoms, with sub-micrometer resolution. Laser spectroscopy of a Fermi gas of strontium has revealed an ultranarrow optical transition that can be used for ultraprecise atomic clocks and ultrasensitive magnetometry.

In the second part of my talk, I will be introducing the Bose-Hubbard model for ultracold atoms and how it has been utilized to realize experimentally in an atomic system of bosons the Hofstadter-Harper Hamiltonian, that is related with the definition of a fundamental unit of electric resistance.

Finally, I will be discussing how my early work can with Airy beams lead to a commercially available microscope.

Σύντομο Βιογραφικό

Georgios Siviloglou has received his Diploma from the Electrical Engineering Department of NTUA and he has done his PhD in Photonics in the University of Central Florida. Before joining SUSTech, as faculty, in 2018, Siviloglou held postdoctoral positions at the University of Amsterdam, as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow (2014-2018), and at MIT (2010-2014). His research interests include nonlinear and non-diffracting optics, imaging of quantum particles, and quantum simulation of topological phenomena with ultracold atoms.
